if they are plastic - yes just rinse them out. If they are plastic/metal combo, separate the two and recycle

wen i had gerbils i always put in toilet paper tubes. you can also give them pieces of cardboard, like from cereal boxes, because they love chewing those also. they use them to make nests. and you can also buy plastic toys for them that have been recycled. if u are creative, you can even make them toys urself, with recycled plastic! jus make sure its safe, like there are no sharp edges and you really shouldnt use toxic glue.

I agree with jfpdragon. your can is probably the least damaging thing about your tobacco use. disregarding the negative effects of tobacco on your body, which will lead to more medical treatment in the future and thus more money spent by you which inevitably equals more resources (fuel, electricity, drugs) used to treat you. the production of tobacco is done far from where you live most likely, probably in south america. the growth of tobacco cultivation is one of the many factors which is adding to rainforest clearing. the shipping, processing and retailing of tobacco is a very expensive and energy intensive process. so tobacco usage is more than just bad because you are blowing smoke (in fact this is also negligiable since the smoke is coming mostly from grown materials not from fossilized fuels which are being reintroduce into the cycle after millions of years of lying dormant.)
but to answer your question... yeah just wash it out and recycle.

Do your part to save the environment by not using disgusting tobacco! Cigarettes or the smokeless variety. That will negate having to do something with the can at all, and will spare the people around you.

I actually use them to make musical instruments, however since I do not chew--the cans are hard to find---
