Why can't you just zip them together and use hyperlinks? The hyperlinks should still work if the documents are still in the same relative position. Also, you won't save any space dirrectly embedding anything.

One other solution would be to do it in word with hyperlinks, and then convert the word documents to a CHM file. http://www.macrobject.com/en/word-2-chm/ I forget what CHM stands for, but you have probably used one. They are usually used for help documentation.

If you wanted to get really fancy you could probably do what it is you want to do with html. Using Html and javascript you could create one single document with all kinds of content and divs and stuff appearing and disappearing.

One final idea would be to put all of your content into one single document, and then use Hyperlinks and bookmarks to navigate that document.
