Unintended weight loss continuing 7 months after birth?

Hi,

I had my beautiful baby girl May 30, 2009 (almost 7 months ago). I had mild, diet-controlled gestational diabetes during the pregnancy. At 6 weeks postpartum I tested negative for diabetes. But ever since the birth, my weight has been declining steadily.

I was 140lbs before I got pregnant, and for 5'8", that's pretty slim. I gained only 15 lbs during the pregnancy due to the dietary restrictions of the gestational diabetes. Now, I am down to 123 and still losing, despite a healthy, mostly balanced diet and a large serving of ice cream every night, plus various junk food during the day with the intention of gaining weight. I feel skeletal and unhealthy, and I can tell my husband is not as attracted to me because of it, though he doesn't mention it, the sweetie.

I am breastfeeding my daughter, and she is chubby. I read that breastfeeding takes 300-500 calories a day, but I am sure that I am eating at least 500 calories more a day than usual, probably even more most days.

I'm sorry if this sounds obnoxious to those who are having trouble slimming down after the pregnancy, I don't dare discuss it with my friends for this reason.

Has anyone else had this experience? I haven't been to the doctor since my 6-week postpartum, but I plan on going back soon.

No it's not uncommon to lose weight, because your breast feeding baby is taking up more nutrients. If your concerned about your weight, then I would talk to your doctor about it.

On a side note: I to have diabetes, celiac disease, and meiners disease. This limits what I can eat. I'm pregnant with twins, and I've only gained 19 lbs. I'm due to have these babies in early Jan. I'm on 100% complete bed rest (and yes it sucks). I eat lots of leafy green veggies, lots of non-starchy vegetables, non-sugary fruit, egg whites, lean chicken & turkey, drink water, taking a ton of vitamins, and I feel fantastic. I don't eat anything that is processed what so ever. These babies are doing really really well.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

That's normal if you are breastfeeding. My weight loss increased rapidly after 6 months. Sounds like you just need to increase your caloric intake-- which sounds obvious but make sure its with high healthy fats (avocados, nuts, seeds) and whole grains. Don't eat junk. Whatever you add in, make sure it has lots of good nutritional value so your body can do something with it. Even if its an extra meal a day-- try eating 5 meals a day (every three hours or so).

You need to have your thyroid checked at your next apt. This happened to me and it turned out to be thyroiditis. I had lost 30 lbs in a handful of months! It's common after having had a baby, don't worry. But get it checked out.

That said, I had mine biopsied. Don't be afraid if they do this. It sounds intimidating, but it doesn't hurt and it's better to know for sure what's going on... you're probably fine, though :) Maybe you got lucky and your metabolism just got a nice kick in the butt :)

Nothing was wrong with my biopsy. I'm not on meds. It's going to even itself out eventually. I actually turned right back around and gained it all back a few months later. I'm back to my Pre-pregnancy weight... wanting to lose about 10 lbs. But I'm now addicted to sugar like never before :P It's almost cruel to feel invincible to weight gain only to go back to normal with no warning :)

    Good luck! Don't worry :) It's totally normal :)

My daughter was once 7 lbs 10oz born and 19lbs 5ozs at 37 weeks (eight one million/two months) She was once consistently below the fiftieth centile till this factor, whilst she went above. My 1st son was once 7lbs 2ozs born and 18lbs 10ozs at 34 weeks (7 one million/two months) second son 7lbs born, 18lbs 15ozs at 34 weeks. third son 7lbs 1oz born and is best three months ancient, however as the opposite two boys have been spot at the fiftieth centile I count on he's going to comply with. Surprisingly they have got all adopted frequently the identical sample. In my revel in if she is completely happy, feeding and dozing good you've got bought not anything to fear approximately. There'll be tons extra govt guidlines for her to comply with as she will get older, permit her break out with being slightly "below weight" for now!

hhmmm...i would talk to your doc about your thyroid.....and in the mean time don't eat up on the junk food........if you need to gain weight and still provide well for your breastmilk, then turn to proteins and healthy fats found in nuts, seeds, soy, avocado

instead of that big ol' bowl of ice cream and junk every night...dig into some yummy fresh guacamole

keep a bag of walnuts, sunflower seeds, almonds, ect with you

but really......go get yourself checked out...thyroid issues can def. crop up after pregnancy
