I'm scared to run outside?

No really, I'm scared to go outside and run because I think people will snicker looking through their windows and whatnot, and say "Oh look at that fat kid trying to loose weight harharhar."

I know that sounds really stupid, but I'm dead serious. What can I do to quit thinking that? I mean, I know they probably aren't really going to make fun of me, and if they do then I'll never know about it, but that thought is keeping me from going outside and running around. And I actually want to go outside, I'm not just making up an excuse for being lazy. How do I stop thinking that thought?

A high chance you wont get that, specialy if you keep to your area, put music in to block thoughts out your head and concentrate on your breathing flow, pace yourself dont hold your breath at any point.

i KNOW what you mean, i have a friend who is worried about others so i jogged with him and told him to listen to music concentrate with his breathing and dont go fast go to a speed you feel right at, we started, not even 2mins has gone i stayed back behind him quite far back tbh and we went down the high street, people looked but said nothing, he had a smile on his face and doing what alot of people wish they had time or could not be lazy and want to do.

He noticed iwas far back, i went abit far back so he looked like he was on his own to prove no one will say anything but stupid chavs might but the thing is YOUR doing something about it and YOUR doing something good, their just stupid kids who most likly thinking, I WISH i could jog properly without getting stitches.

Breath properly, pase yourself concentrate on it

listen to music to keep motivated.

and that should help you concentrate, half time you will not pay attention to the music but on your breathing.

Thing is, most people won't think that at all. I see someone running outside, I don't really think anything about it, even if they're overweight. It's only YOU stopping yourself from running by thinking this. It's YOUR judgements of yourself that are preventing you from getting out there. For example, during presentations I used to think "everyone will laugh if I mess up, people are judging me while I'm up here". The truth of the matter is, most people don't care. They are too busy thinking about their own lives / how their presentation will go! So you need to step up and go for it. I used to jog outside all the time and eventually it just comes naturally and you don't think about it at all. Even if someone DID laugh and say "haha, theres a fat kid running.." they will forget about you after 2 minutes. It's really no big deal. It's not like you started nuclear war, no one's gonna hate you for getting out there! At least you can say you're trying! And once you get into it, you will get more and more confident about running as you lose weight and feel much better about yourself. So go for it. :) Remember: Don't let other people get in the way of your happiness. I hope I could help.

they will NOT think that. Plus, people probably have better things to do than look out their windows all day and snicker at people running outside. They'll probably see you, wave, and move on. Have confidence, if they see you aren't cowering, they will probably just be like okay whatever.

In the mean time, if this doesn't help, get a treadmill and run inside and you can also watch movies while you do this :)

What do you mean "im kind of scared of what i might run in too". Do you live in a bad neighborhood or you're afraid of dogs? Maybe carry a phone, a whistle and a mace? Get over your fear of people making fun of you because you're big. Some people are just mean and it should be more their problem than yours. If you look afraid, you become an easy target since bullies and mean people always choose to bother people that do not seem to be a threat. Look fierce.

I used to think the exact same thing when I started working out - I was totally, totally afraid to set food it the gym because I thought everyone would laugh at me and think "Look at that scrawny little freak!!!"

The truth is this - NOBODY ever makes fun of anyone at a gym, or running, or anything else because the people who workout and what not appreciate the fact that everyone has to start somewhere. I was scrawny... the biggest, buffest guy in my gym used to weigh over 275lbs of fat... see what I mean?

Never, ever be ashamed or afraid of what people think when it comes to working out. People used to laugh at me when I first told them I was going to the gym. "Why on Earth would you want to waste your time doing that?" Well guess what - a year later I had slabbed on some serious muscle and put them all to shame.

It's just like the Biggest Loser. Everyone has to have a starting point - no matter how hard it is to acknowledge it. Fitness is a journey to a better you - not a destination. Just get started and stick to it, and in the end it'll be YOU who has the last laugh!!!

You probably won't be able to make yourself stop thinking that, because you're being self-conscious. Just tell yourself that what people think (even if they aren't thinking it) shouldn't matter to you, and you're doing yourself something to keep yourself in shape.

If I saw an overweight person running outside I would think the opposite. I would silently acknowledge them for trying to be a healthier person.

Hey...atleast you're having a go, anybody with half a brain would respect you for that.

Anyone who thinks its "funny" is obviously a brainless moron, what are they doing? Watching TV and eating junk.
