HP dv6000 lights on, goes on and off...?

HP dv6000, screen is dark,,,laptop goes on and off will not boot up,,,can I fix it? more importantly how can I get my documents, pictures, media etc off? Any recommendation on new laptop that has least amount of problems? This would be the 3rd major fix for this HP in less than 3 years...
