Can Beagles be running dogs?

Just wondering. I tried to run with my 4 year old Beagle named Miloh today, and he just tripped along until we stopped running. He was under my feet and everything, and I nearly fell a few times. Is there a way to train Beagles to run, or are they just not good for being running dogs like some breeds are? I know you have to train any dog to run, but will a Beagle ever catch on to it, and are there any problems Beagles can get from running too much?

I run with my beagle 2 times a week. I trained her young though. Her first run with me was when she was 6 months old. We didn't go very far at first and we took lots of little breaks. I think she actually likes running better than walking. Try to associate the word "run" when you want him to run and "walk" when your going for a walk. this is what i do.

Also there is a supplement called Glucosamine Chondroitin, which prevents wear and tear on joints. You can get it at your vet or any pet store like Petsmart, Petco, etc.

I am on my 4th Beagle and she's now 11 years old. Beagles are wonderful, friendly, social animals that were bred for hunting rabbits. So, they do catch a scent and are on their way! The potential problem is that the scent may be on the opposite of me and she'll cross my path quickly and without warning! I've almost tripped over her several times. Also, they tend to have short legs and running distances isn't that easy for them. BUT, they LOVE to go for walks and those walks can be quite brisk! I typically walk mine for 30 minutes every day and we went on longer jaunts when she was younger. Hope you have a great time with your puppy as the Beagle breed is a wonderful companion.

OK, so you tried it once and you seem ready to give up. How is your beagle going to learn what you want if you don't keep trying and teach him what you want? Give the poor dog a chance to figure it out.

Beagles would make excellent running companions.

No...Beagle can run..it's in their nature...just make sure you aren't dragging the dog..he may just not want to do it because some dogs are lazier than others or don't like the leash thing...let him run around freely in a fenced yard to see first how he reacts.
