Christians and others: Are you offended when someone wishes you a "Happy Solstice"?

I know that many Christians are upset by the phrase "Happy Holidays." I don't celebrate Christmas, but I do celebrate the Solstice. Is it okay to wish happiness based on my own beliefs and feelings about this time of the year, or should we ditch it completely and limit ourselves to "Have a nice day"?

Update:

Cool! Thank you! :-)

And a Happy Festivus to you. Eat, drink, and be merry, for the sun hath returneth.

    LOL

    Probably most Christians aren't.

I truly don't get the problem with "Happy Holidays" -- it is NOT a recent, anti-Christian invention, as wing-nuts would have everyone believe.

When I was a child (60s), "Season's Greetings" and "Happy Holidays" were common -- TV ads would have companies wishing everyone these things; they were on cards people sent each other.

Since "the holiday season" starts with Big T Day, and goes through New Year -- and thus has MORE THAN ONE HOLIDAY, I cannot understand why people have a problem with these innaucuous expressions of GOOD WILL.

Wishing someone happy something is a GOOD thing, isn't it?

The fact that there's a variety of holidays celebrated between the "bookend" holidays has nothing to do with anything, really. But it's absurd for a segment of the population to try to force everyone to pretend that everyone celebrates Christmas. That's NEVER been true.

Maybe we should all say "Happy Whatev" -- lol.

I don't mind which they say, all I know is that they mean well and don't mean to offend us, how should each person know what others celebrate?

It makes me smile when someone wishes me a happy christmas or a happy solstice.

Hope you have a wonderful solstice/christmas and a great day :)

No, why would we be. I am not offended when people say Happy Holidays (happy HOLY days is fine with me).

I wonder is solstice folks who are making money on Christmas say Happy Solstice. You see, Christmas is a federal holiday.

I've never had anyone say that to me in passing... I think it would be cool.

I let my kids open a gift today in recognition of Winter Solstice, after all... that's the real reason for the season. It has grown and morphed since then, as all things do, but I think it's important that it not be forgotten altogether.

No. Because I celebrate the Solstice as well.

It's no offense to me but, if you know I'm Christian then I prefer a "Merry Christmas." Happy Solstice by the way.

  • I don't really care what someone wishes me, it's the thought that counts, :).

    Happy Solstice

    Happy Yule

    Merry Christmas

    Happy Hanukkah

    Happy Kwanzaa

    Happy New Year!

    Blessed Solstice to you, too!

It might offend some, but to me it identifies your beliefs. I would say "Merry Christmas."
