rap vs. hip hop examples?

Ok, I'm a guy who listens to rock, rock and roll, country, R&B, 50's, 60's. (motown included), 70's, 80's, the list goes on. But!

I can't wrap my head around what rap is vs. hip hop. To me, it's really the same. I know I'm wrong (I've been told as much ;-) ) So, I need help to distinguish the two from each other. Can anyone give me a classic example of what rap is and what hip hop is? Artist/Song is desired.

Here's the deal. I spend most of my time writing pop and rock (both of all genres) and recording tunes. My daughter wants me to help lay down some beats for her in what she likes (both rap and hip hop) I listen to her radio stations and ask her what do you call is this tune? kinda thing? I keep screwing up. ( yea I'm white ;-) )

I need a tune from each genre to help me understand how each genre differs from the other. What would really help is the difference between beat patterns, bass patterns, and overall feel of the tune. I know this is a tall order but I will take any suggestions!!!

Thanks in advance!

    Rap has "Rappers"

The "Bling, Bling", "Money, Sex, Clothes, Hos", "Nonsense" subject matter.

Largely mainstream. Showcases what the heads at record companies consider 'marketable' to sell records.

Notable Tracks: "Crank Dat" by Soulja Boy Tell 'Em, "I Get Money" by 50 Cent,

Hip Hop has "Lyricists" or "Emcees"

The "Self Consciousness", "Meaningful", "Political", "Social Issues" subject matter.

Now largely underground. Showcases what connects a beat & poetry creating hip hop to speak from the heart.

Notable Tracks: "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, "I Used to Love H.E.R." by Common Sense, "Keep Ya Head Up" by 2Pac, "Letter to the King" by The Game, "Hip Hop Saved My Life" by Lupe Fiasco

The difference that I see is that hip hop has a more thecno-ish type sound and kind of party sounding like a lady gaga song or something of that sort like black eyed peas. Rap almost has a more serious sound and its more of a talking tone in the "singer" where as hip hop generally i think theres some singing or voice mutilation.

That's by one derfinition of hip hop; but some people just basically label hip hop as the new clubbin songs and rap as the serious 90's stuff. so rap is old school like tupac (i dont think anybody would ever consider tupac to be hip hop no matter what definition they choose) and hip hop would be like soulja boy or something.

    Hip Hop = music genre

Rap = the art of MC'ing or making Hip Hop music

no difference, it's just slightly quicker to say I like RAP instead of HIP HOP

I may be wrong, but I think hip hop has more of a pop sound to it like Kanye West or Diddy.Rap is more of Snoop Dogg or Jay Z because their sound is more I guess you could say...hardcore.
