  • Homebrewing and Homewinemaking Subject Heading?

Does anyone else think there should be a home brewing/winemaking subheading under Food - Beer Wine and Spirits? I seem to be answering a lot of these questions a month. I was just thinking there may be other experienced homebrewers that would be helping others enter this rewarding hobby.

  • Looking for 20th Century Comp books?

Like the title says - I'm looking for suggestions on books on 20th Century Music Composition.

I've found a few - I have a few, but would like more. It's relatively easy to find books about showing examples of recent composer's work diving a little into his style. But what I'm looking for is a book(s) that not only lecture on compositional style, but also might offer exercises to help solidify to material with actual experience.

Something like Fux's Gradus ad Parnassum and Hindemith's Craft of Musical Composition. I've got both but have yet to dive into Hindemith's treatise. I was under the impression that it was based on traditional harmony (having glanced quickly through the first book)

    Thanks, all

  • Anyone heard of Apocalyptica?

They are a band made up of cello players (and a drummer) They do some originals, (I think) but they do one heck of a job of re-creating classical works in a hard rock/heavy metal fashion.

Since I was schooled in art music, I was wondering what others thought of this band and/or genre. ( I know of other bands that have done metal covers of classical tunes.)

    So my poll is this:

    good idea

    bad idea

what is your reason behind your answer.

  • Same Sex Marriage poll?

I read an article today about same sex marriages. Which is prompting me to ask the following of the answers group:

Are you for, against, or on the fence about same-sex marriages?

Personally, I'm for it. It's not my choice to live that life, however, I feel that others should be allowed to live their lives as free humans. Whether I agree with it is another question,

Please, no trolling, flaming, or derogatory comments. This is a genuine study into minds of others on this subject.

    Thank You

  • Been told I'm racist?

I love MoTown, and 50's music in general, do wop, bring it on. Which we all know that MoTown is predominantly black.

But when I say I think rap, gangsta rap past 90's, R&B past the 80's is pure crap . . . It's not real music - and had the people of MLK's day seen this crap nowadys they'd be sad. I get called a racist hater by younger fans (who don't have a clue what MoTown is OR 50's music) I mention the names, Barry White (ok maybe not MoTown), Dianna Ross, The Supremes, Four Tops, Mr Gaye.

    I get blank stares.

  • painting sites for identification?

I'm looking to identify a painting my grand mother did many many years ago(like way back in the 70's). My dad tells me it is a copy of a painting my Mother loved that she saw in a furniture store. I have the painting in my hands since i loved it and it reminded me of times past.

My mother and my grandmother died many years ago without revealing who this painting is modeled from and whom she'd might know the original composer. I'd love to find the original painter and can provide a picture of the "copy".

I know there's got to be a website out there that someone will know of this obscure work. I'm just looking for ideas as to where to look!!!!!

  • being a premie and signs?

Ok so I was born an Aquarius. But I was a month early - so theoretically I should be a Pisces.

I've noticed that I've got most of the traits of an Aquarius, but some Pisces traits seem to fit as well.

Is it possible for someone to be born before their time to share characteristics between 2 signs?

  • rap vs. hip hop examples?

Ok, I'm a guy who listens to rock, rock and roll, country, R&B, 50's, 60's. (motown included), 70's, 80's, the list goes on. But!

I can't wrap my head around what rap is vs. hip hop. To me, it's really the same. I know I'm wrong (I've been told as much ;-) ) So, I need help to distinguish the two from each other. Can anyone give me a classic example of what rap is and what hip hop is? Artist/Song is desired.

Here's the deal. I spend most of my time writing pop and rock (both of all genres) and recording tunes. My daughter wants me to help lay down some beats for her in what she likes (both rap and hip hop) I listen to her radio stations and ask her what do you call is this tune? kinda thing? I keep screwing up. ( yea I'm white ;-) )

I need a tune from each genre to help me understand how each genre differs from the other. What would really help is the difference between beat patterns, bass patterns, and overall feel of the tune. I know this is a tall order but I will take any suggestions!!!

    Thanks in advance!

  • For Parents Only - School of Rock?

If there was such a thing as the "school of rock" yes like in the movie.

An after school program where your kids would learn how to rock - would you put them in it?

This is not a trolling question but one of whether or not that is any kind of option you would choose for your children.

FYI - I am a parent with stepchildren of my own who WOULD put my kids in it just for the simple fact that it would give them something to do and some sort of goal to achieve to.
