Upgrading to XP 3 issues?

I have a computer with XP SP1, but alas, this is quite inconvenient for me, so I decided I should upgrade to SP3.

I asked one colleague of mine, who is supposedly good with computers, and said that if I get the upgrade from Windows, I don't need to reinstall it, it will just upgrade like any regular program.

But I am quite skeptic about that, and I am reticent to do that without further opinions. I don't want to risk loosing months of work and .psd files and music and what not (I'll do a back-up anyway soon)

Opinions, advice?

It is not an upgrade but a service pack and it is XP SP3. Being a service pack it will just update O/S components that are already on the system - it is not an O/S install. You will not lose anything.

We use SP3 as a standard here at work w/o issues - but we are moving everybody to Windows 7 shortly.

Just run and install all the Windows updates and you'll be upgraded to SP3. You won't lose any data.
