I quit smoking.... when will the cravings go away?

Its been about a week now. I broke down on the first, second and third days and had ONE cigarette near the end of the day. I've been totally smoke free since Saturday. I also quit caffeine too !!!

Update:

i found out i was pregnant and i have a long history with miscarriages. I quit EVERYTHING, smoking, drinking alcohol and coffee. Plus, its too expensive to smoke.

wow nicotine free since saturday... that's a big deal, congrats!!! the good news is that cravings do in fact go away, the bad news is that its not immediately.. however the longer your away from smoking, they will be less intense, and not as often.on occasions i crave now after 5 years, but its more like a random thought than a true craving.. good luck on your quit!!!

actually support groups teach a number of ways to deal with cravings.. one of my favorites is known as the 5 d's..

1 Distract.. for instance you cant smoke while washing dishes

2 Delay ( i don't need one now).. if you always delay you wont smoke.

3 Discuss.. you did that by posting this question.. people in support groups call each other, post, or share in meetings

4 Deep breathe.. most smokers don't breathe deeply except when inhaling.. deep breathing is relaxing, and clears the lungs

5 Drink water.. washes out toxins, as well as relieving cravings..

the good news is that i now have been quit for over 5 years.. i quit trying to quit alone, and joined a support group.. i attend nicotine anonymous meetings both locally and on line.. on line voice meetings are as close as your computer, and you can attend while still smoking, before actually attempting a quit.. however you decide to quit good luck, there is simply no wrong way to quit!!

First of all: good on you! You've done it!

Here's a little info that might help you further.

The real physical withdrawal symptoms from nicotine are nothing to worry about, the problem is in your head. Theoretically the symptoms will leave within 72 hrs. If you still have withdrawals after that, it's due to mental fabrication - because you thought you would have them. Nicotine is very addictive, that's true, and that means you will remain addicted for life, but the (real) symptoms disappear as the nicotine leaves your body (in 72 hrs, most of it actually in just 24).

Consider also: Besides the fact that the physical withdrawal symptoms from nicotine addiction don’t

last very long, they are ridiculously insignificant! They really are.

It’s not like you have to deal with cold shivers or vomiting or the sweats. It’s really just a little anxiousness or restlessness… It’s nothing! It is only your mind that makes any pangs significant, if you focus on them. Get it! They are there, yes, but don’t blow them out of proportion. You can quite easily override them completely.

The reason most people have problems with this is because they believe they will miss smoking - they are getting something out of it and hence they are giving something up.

What that means for you is this: You have to change you mindset about the whole smoking thing. Be glad you don't have to do that anymore - that you have gotten rid of this filthy addiction. Never think you miss it - that's what makes it hard. But instead be happy, content and proud that you've done it. Focus exclusively on the positives. You've done a great thing!

Admittedly, that would have been easier to sort out before you quit, but there is no reason why you can't still do it now. Just be happy with your decision - and that's that!

Congratulations! I quit cold turkey on Dec 7, 1999 and still crave it and am tempted regularly, although it has gotten better as the years go by. I do love the smell (weird, I know) and love to stand downwind from someone smoking. That helps my craving usually. The key is that you have to decide that you're not going to start again. What I tell myself is that it was too hard to quit and I don't want to have to quit again. That and it's a lot more expensive now than when I used to smoke and I don't know what I'd have to sacrifice in my budget in order to smoke. Probably shoes and purses. NO WAY! lol Keep on keepin on.

CONGRATS! Why not try quitting one thing at a time though, caffeine and ciggs! Damn! You have more will power than me!

Anyways, the physical cravings usually go away after a week, then you just have to deal with the emotional aspect.
