Golf Ruling. What did I do ....wrong?
Damn! and I was in the $$. Until I started to get the "yips" so while I was waiting on the 13th. tee at Quail Hollow I decided to take a cuople of balls out and practice at the back of the teeing ground, only to find out?
I appoligize. I was practicing putting at the back of the teeing ground.
And yor right 808State. It was stroke play and I was penalized two strokes, applied at the next hole, for practicing on the back tees and not the tees being used for that day. After I was informed by a rules official. I took a dbl. bogey on the next hole and another on the fifteenth and sevententh dropping from third to to fifteenth. I couldn't muster the inner strength needed to rebound after the penalty. This is one hell of a sport and I love it, even though it can be harsh at times.Thank you for your resonse.

... only to find out you were in a hazard. Because otherwise it would be allowed (I'm assuming you were chipping or putting and not taking full cuts)
Rule 7-2. During Round
A player must not make a practice stroke during play of a hole.
Between the play of two holes, a player must not make a practice stroke, except that he may practice putting or chipping on or near:
(a) the putting green of the hole last played,
(b) any practice putting green, or
(c) the teeing ground of the next hole to be played in the round,
provided a practice stroke is not made from a hazard and does not unduly delay play (Rule 6-7).
Strokes made in continuing the play of a hole, the result of which has been decided, are not practice strokes.
Exception:
When play has been suspended by the Committee, a player may, prior to resumption of play, practice (a) as provided in this Rule, (b) anywhere other than on the competition course and (c) as otherwise permitted by the Committee.
Penalty for Breach of Rule 7-2:
Match play
- Loss of hole;
Stroke play
- Two strokes. In the event of a breach between the play of two holes, the penalty applies to the next hole.
That's not bad considering that you only dropped 12 spots after adding 7 strokes to your score. Sorry you dropped out of the $.

Unless there was a local rule prohibiting practice, and as you were on the teeing ground of the next hole, you did nothing wrong. No penalty
