Well your best bet would be to get a Mac. If that is out of the question then go with the Sony. Dell has the worst customer satisfaction rating year-after-year compared to the rest. I'll have you know that Apple has the best too ;). But if these are your 2 options the Sony hands down.
If it's going to be a gaming rig you might as well buy a MacBook pro. Your SONY is only a 13" screen, whereas for $1999 you can get a 15" MacBook Pro, which has better graphics than the SONY, the NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT is ranked 65th whereas the Radeon HD 5370 is ranked 80th. The Radeon also only has a 64-bit bus width, allowing it to utilize only 128 MB of the video memory anyways, while the 9600M GT has a 128-bit path allowing you to utilize 256 MB of video RAM. The higher video memory is just a selling point for companies, when they are usually capable of much less than they say. Also the SONY has old-school DDR2 800 MHz RAM, while the MacBook Pro has DDR3 1066 MHz RAM as well as a 7 hour built-in battery. You could get away with 4GB on a MBP as well, no game is going to use more than 4 GB now or any time in the near future.

Sony.
Better processor, still.. DDR2 hard to compete against DDR3, but i doubt u will see the difference.
ATI on Sony beat 210M
Dont listen to those dam Mac fanboys, that is ridiculous, gaming on a Macbook pro? what kind of idea is that.... I believe u already think about Mac before asking the question. So, my opinion is go with the Sony, Dell has bad customer service, and Sony more reliable.
I think i going to get a thumb down for talking bad about Mac again, happen every time LOL

Macs are definitely the best. I wish I had bought one. They cost about what my computer did but I didn't go with them because I had never used one before and didn't know the system or feel comfortable buying one. I should have just sucked it up. But if you're deadset on one of these two, just speaking from personal experience, I definitely say go with the Sony. I have one, a VGN similar to what you're describing, and it's worked really well for me. Before I bought it I asked all my friends about their computers and received terrible reports on Dells. Toshiba is also supposed to be pretty good.
Also, I recommend getting the extended warranty if it's offered to you. Mine was for three years and my battery died just after one year and my computer keyboard had to be replaced at 2 years and 11
months. There was no extra charge for these services.
I would also recommend not going through Best Buy. They told me they would fix my keyboard in 2 weeks and kept it for a month without updating me on the status at all.

Don't think about sony.....
if you live in USA you should choose DELL but if you not you should think and search better : DELL in the some countries Like Iran or Iraq and... has not any american laptop and you just fine chines DELL laptops, and you should fine american sony laptops..........

I will choose Sony VGN-SR590 because of its specs and design. DELL had few durability issues while sony impresses more consumers.

The Sony seems to have slightly better specs (processor) so I would go with that. I don't like dell.

Are they both 13.3". I would choose the Sony if they are the same size because it has a faster processor and faster Video card

If you don't mind something larger and want to do more 3D gaming, consider an Asus
