My 2 week old is eating CONSTANTLY and screaming when he's not. Is this Colic?

I feed him for an hour and a half and he falls asleep. But the minute I move him he wakes up screaming again! I fed him for almost 3 hours last night. I am breastfeeding him. Is he not getting enough from me? Is this normal?? I just feel like a horrible mother because I can't make him happy!

This is totally normal, don't worry, and it will get easier. We are a bottle feeding culture and we are taught to expect babies to conform to a bottle feeding "schedule" with nursing for x minutes on one side and x on the other every y hours and give a pacifier in between. But that is NOT normal or natural, it is an artificial schedule improvised by those who are trying to replace breastfeeding.

Babies are designed to nurse nearly constantly at first. Their stomachs are tiny, about the size of a marble, and breast milk is the perfect food for them. It is digested quickly and efficiently. The milk you produce when you feel let down (if you feel let down, some women don't and that is normal) is different from the milk you produce 5 minutes later, or 10 minutes later. And nursing is much more than food! Pacifiers were invented as a poor substitute for the breast for bottle fed babies.

Let him nurse as much as he needs, just find a comfortable chair and a good book. If you don't have a comfortable carrier that you can nurse in (like the Moby wrap or a sling) get one as soon as possible, it will make your life so much easier! For now, though, take it easy and rest as much as you can. Have you tried nursing laying down yet? For me, it is most comfortable to lay on my side with my arm tucked under my head and my other arm wrapped around baby. This will help you both get more rest. If you are not cosleeping already, consider it. Babies are meant to sleep with their mothers, it is perfectly safe (many argue safer than crib sleeping) and wonderful for mom and baby.

Congratulations! It is so hard right now, I know, but stick it out and it will get easier and easier.

    Honey,

Your not a horrible mother, you just got started knowing eachother. If he continues take him to see his doctor. I wouldn't worry about it much. I have a 3 year old son and I pretty much had the same problem. His issue is he is outside the womb and being out side is something to get use to. So being near you works for him. If this is your first the both of you need to get sociated with eachother once that happens you should be good to go.

you may have a couple of issues going on here

if he is acting like this only in the evening time, it's called cluster feeding and is normal

make sure he is latching correctly and able to take in sufficient milk.....please go see your lactation consultant for reassurance of correct latch...and she can weigh him to see how many ounces he is taking in

    comfort nursing is normal

wear him to keep him happy.......get a wrap or sling and wear him around to ease him in case he is having some colic/gas or whatever

do you hear him swallowing at let down?? is he having wet and dirty diapers?? remember what goes in must come out

  • Sounds like a growth spurt :-) feed on demand.

I would try giving him some formula. I am breast feeding also, they say they go through growth spurts where they eat a lot. I couldn't keep up. There is a tea called Mothers Nursing Tea by yogi that apparently helps you produce more. I just couldn''t feel like my baby was hungry, so gave him a bottle of formula once every few days. Then, once I was producing enough to pump, I would put 2 to 3 ounces in and he would gobble it right up. He is now 5 weeks and a pretty happy baby. GOod luck.
