Question about my dog...wondering what this is?
OK, so i have a 9 year old heeler, Stewart. He has done this thing since he was a puppy and i am curious as to why he does it.
He will not chew on toys...he prefers to suck on them. he will have a toy in his mouth and he will kneed the toy with his paws...much like a pup would do while nursing. Could this be some sign of him no being weened properly? He was a adoption from a shelter at about 12 weeks and they had very little information about where he came from.
RIght now he appears to be asleep...but he has a toy in his mouth and he is sucking on it...it is really strange.. Anyone have any input on this?

Don't know what to tell you about that behavior, but it sounds really cute. You should put a video on YouTube.

I'm not sure about dogs, but I know that when cats do this, it is most likely because they were taken from mama too soon.
I had a cat who did that for years and years. I guess it's reasonable to think that age-inappropriate kneading and sucking would mean the same thing for puppies/dogs.

its a comfort thing,I have heard its usually done by dogs who have been taken from their mother too young of age (I dont know that thats true, but I do know that it is a comfort thing) what it is,is it reminds them of when they were young, and being safe and comfortable with their mom (they act like theure nursing) they usually do it right before falling asleep during the act,we have an 11 yr old dog that does it,he has all his life...

don't worry this is fine, my 5 yr old poodle loves to suck and lick on her toys, its just the way that they tend to play

I think your dog might be a closeted homosexual. Have an intervention thing and get him to come out of the closet. It'll be better for him, and you, as he has only a few years left. But no matter what, be supportive of good old Stewart.

don't worry your dog is fine! some dogs choose different ways to play with toys than other dogs, do not worry though!
