Question about reading a pedigree.?
I have a new puppy and, on her pedigree, I see several of her relatives who have been DNA tested. I know what DNA is and I know about DNA testing, but what does it mean in relation to the pedigree papers? Does it imply that the dog is a show dog, or just a regular dog that someone had DNA tested for grins and giggles? I would assume that reputable breeders would benefit from DNA testing but I'm just wondering if that's something only done for show dogs, or ANY dog. How can I tell if she has any champion blood? Will the papers say "champion" under the dogs name, or is there some other indication? My puppy's mother was a show dog (did OK but nothing special) and her father (I believe) is just a regular pet. By the way, I have absolutely NO intentions to breed my puppy regardless of whether or not she has champions in her pedigree. Although her markings are perfect, her conformation is not quite up to standards. (And I just dont have the desire to mess with the whole breeding thing.) I'm only asking because I'm curious to know why some dogs were DNA tested and some were not.

Dogs used for stud a certain number of times have to have their DNA registered.
AKC's printed pedigrees don't have red text, for titled dogs, the text is all black, you have to look before the dog's name for "CH" to indicate a conformation champion. (The online research pedigrees have red text for titled dogs.)
If the dog has foreign dogs in it's pedigree, they won't show up with their titles. Both of my papillons have foreign stock they were bred from, and the foreign champions do not have titles by their names because they didn't get an AKC title, and the pedigree is an AKC pedigree.
(If there are foreign dogs, they will have their registration number for their originating kennel club.)

"DNA testing" covers several things, the most common is paternity type testing to verify the parentage of a pup if that ever comes up. AKC requires it to register a studs 7th litter(the puppy mills left AKC in droves after that was put in) . Some do this voluntarily with females & studs that do not, and never will, have 7 litters in case parentage accusations are made after the dog in question is dead - the data is encoded & stored so it can be used later. If you seeing DNA mentioned on an official AKC pedigree this is what is meant
There are an increasing number of health problems that can be DNA tested for - with much more accuracy than the more traditional screening tests. he beauty of these is you really don't have to test the offspring if both parents are negative because the pups can't inherit a trait neither parent carries...this data would not appear on an official AKC ped but might on a breeders hand assembled one.

AKC now requires it, I think only the Male has to be DNA tested, but not sure. This way now breeders can breed two males in the sane breeding and just dna test the puppies aind know which male is the father. That way they don't have to decide which one would be the best father. If the dog is a Champion you will see CH in front of the dogs name.
Probably more than you needed to know,

It depends who made the pedigree. Some places include titles, DNA, judges critique, etc. Others simply give the dog's name. As far as DNA testing, it may imply that the dog is an import. DNA testing done outside the U.S. is not recognized here though. Males AND females must be DNA tested before the litter can be registered on imported dogs. Google "how to read pedigree" for your breed. Here is a sample for the GSD. http://www.vonlotta.com/definitions.html
