2000 Nissan Maxima front CV joint boot question? Nissan Techs please?

Had my car in for some unrelated service and this was brought to my attention. Was told both front boots are worn and leaking lubricant. I was told they cannot replace just the boots but have to replace the twin axles also. They quoted a price of $640.00. Does this sound reasonable, high? Do they have to replace the axles or is it just easier for them.

To date I have not experienced any vibrations or noise. Car drives fine.

Any suggestions.

Replacing the outside boot is easy enough but the cost if the tech does both outside boots and a inside boot tears shortly after? Remanufactured axles come in different quality too. Some partially restored and good drive shaft shop quality. Also your installer should never hit or bump the CV joint because this could pinch the boot and there you go leaking again. $640 sounds ok. Price axles in your area and ask if I bring my own axles How much Labor are you going to charge me. A couple things does your car have ABS brakes and does it have limited slip differential Look at the "trans" on the vin Number tag does the trans # have a V? if so that uses a different inner Axle for Viscus differential and will not interchange.

Unless you know much about cars, thats accurate. I had an 04 Maxima and the parts around axles were all pressed into place. I had a friend with a press who was able to help me. A regular mechanic wouldnt do that though...your right it is easier to replace the whole thing. But we ran into alot of problems. Repairs for those things are expensive and difficult. Good luck?

    sorry fact of life

its often true that "as long as its apart you may as well."..fill in blank...they have to come out to replace the boots and are 10 yrs old..so you may as well.....

shop around,,,rebuilt cv joints are cheap and a non dealer can prob do job for hundreds less,,

you can just replace the boots but you have to pull them anyway so they figure you might as well just replace the cv joints.
