Is it worth it to stay on property at Universal Orlando?
We are planning a family vacation to Orlando in late July/early August. Our main objective is to go to Disney World, but my 8 year old daughter is very excited about Harry Potter World opening in Orlando? Is it worth it to stay on property to avoid the lines? We were at Disney last year, so know what to expect there, but have never been to Universal. Our kids are 8, 6, and 5. Is there a lot for them to do? Any information would be helpful!

Yes you do avoid the lines at Universal if you stay on property. You room key serves as a fast pass and you can skip the lines with it.
All 3 resorts at Universal are very nice. The Portifino is an American Express fine resort which puts it at the same level of service and luxury as a Ritz-Carlton. There are no Disney resorts that have that status. Of the 3 resorts Hard Rock is the most kid oriented one. They play rock music under the water in the pool. You're kids will love it.

If your doing Disney and Universal, I would probably chose Disney over Universal, because the resorts at Disney are nicer and you have more choice, that being said the ones at Universal are nice too.
Staying on property doesnt really mean your avoiding the lines, because it's going to be packed regardless of what you do, Harry Potter is huge and many people will be coming down for the opening of the park.
When you stay on property at Universal you do get free express passes, so that is a plus.
There isn't as much for them to do as there is at Disney, throughout the resorts and the parks.
You could probably make a day trip out of it, depending on the lines. It would be a 2 day max amount of time you could probably spend there because most of the rides are geared towards older people (teenagers +). There is a kids section at Universal, and theres Suess Landing at Islands of Adventure. There's also Toon Lagoon which is also kid appropriate.
Anyways, when it comes down to it, based on your kids age, I would pick staying at Disney over Universal, and just drive over on the days that you plan on going, since it's not that far.
