red devil cichlid breeding question.... im sure it would be the same for other large cichlids though?

my female RD has this thing on her underbelly infront of her last fin.... its a white thing and ita about 1/4 inch long, does this mean she is going to lay eggs soon or is it something wrong with her? it is out of the ordinary, its not just the normal anal opening, its in the same place but its big and white. they live in a healthy tank with good water quality and the girl and the boy have been in the same tank for a while.... nothing new in the tank. has anyone ever seen this on a large cichlid?

PS- the thing kind of looks like a penis... but white... and yes i know she is female because she has laid eggs one time so far... male just was divided so i didnt get the chance to let them do their thing

    Hi,

Yes this is totally normal. The female will lay her eggs on a flat rock, or bottom of the tank. The male will then circle around and fertilize them. The eggs will be creamy/tan in color. After 3-4 days you should see "wigglers". These wigglers will eat micro-organisms in the tank and on the parents for around a week. Both parents will protect the young. The young fry will need to eat baby brine shrimp, artemia, or finely crushed flakes. Be prepared for a alot of babies!

    Congrads on your mated pair!

    I hope this helps!

    Kris

anything that's under cichlasoma for example, cichlasoma nigrofasciatum (convict cichlid).studies show that all cichlids under cichlasoma are closely related. but dont try to cross breed it with, for example a severum.they're not closely related and hybridding the 2 results in a blood parrot-like cichlid

It is her ovipositor or egg tube. That is a good indication she is ready to breed. If the male is in the same tank and they are pushing gravel and plants around they are looking to set up a nesting site. Have a couple large flat rocks to choose from. Slate or granite are good choices. The male should also have his tube out. It is thinner and more pointed. Be sure to read up on their mating habits and care / feeding of the fry. Plan on a lot of space for the 50 to 300 babies. I tried to find a good site to send you to but couldn't find one, sorry. If you look up breeding for Oscars or Texas Cichlids they will be very similar. Actually Red Devils and Texas Cichlids can interbreed.

they could have mated somehow...and RD's are so cool! though they need alot of space and like can only have one fish in the tank...and yeah...

though they're so amazing, i think she might be pregnant but how do you know she laid the eggs? did you see her?? or was she guarding? because don't the males guard the eggs or is that another kind of cichlid im thinking about?
