what should i do for a broken tooth?
I had a root canal on a tooth that got decay under a filling (lower molar tooth). They have filled the root with the permanent filling and placed a temp filling on the top of the root filing. While eating supper tonight about 2/3 of the inside (tongue side) part of the remaining tooth broke off. The temp filing down to the gum line is exposed and it is sharp along my tongue. I am not in pain as I don't feel anything with that tooth anyways. I can't see my dentist for over a week since it is the holidays then the weekend. Are there any precautions i can take to keep this from getting bad? I would hate to have to have this tooth pulled after spending so much time (and money) getting the root canal done.

I would have to agree with the posts above mine you need to see your dentist ASAP, that tooth has a strong chance of getting reinfected and might need to be pulled if it does. Considering you say 2/3 of the tooth is gone there is a small chance that they will be able to save it and if they do save it you will need a post and core since there is not enough structural support to hold in dental cement but please visit your dentist ASAP you want to try and save that tooth.
Hope this helps,

If the root canal gets reinfected because of the fracture, then the root canal may need to be retreated. You need to get a temporary filling packed into that tooth ASAP. Most offices set aside emergency time.
You should have been told or warned not to eat or chew on the root canal tooth until it has been crowned.

If you have insurance, go to the ER and if it is infected they can at least give you a prescription for the strongest available to help to fight the infection, which will help get rid of some of the pain. Then you can still keep the appointment with your dentist on Tuesday and he can handle the situation from there. I have had a broken tooth for more than two years and now it is abscess, so get it taken care of as soon as possible. It will only get worse, so get it taken care of. Good luck!

A FRACTURE THAT EXTENDS BELOW THE GUM-LINE MAY BE TOO SEVERE AND REQUIRE EXTRACTION. 2/3 OR 66% OF THE TOOTH STRUCTURE HAVING BROKEN OFF IS A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT.
