What's the role/significance of a team captain in soccer?
Forgive my ignorance, and I know this is more a videogame question, but I figured the folks on this forum would definitely know more. I bought a copy of FIFA 09 for my PS3 (much cheaper than the current FIFA 10) and assigning roles to my team, my captain seems to be one of the least capable players on the squad. I took the captaincy away from him and gave it to a newcomer who is the best player I have.
I've just wondering what impact (in real life) a captain has for his teammates, and on what basis it's given on.
United red - that's kind of what I figured. In American Football and basketball, the captains are allowed to approach and question the referees on calls they have made without being subject to disciplinary action like an ordinary player would be. I figured that's the case in soccer, but apparently, it's just sort of an honorary position of no real actual duties/respobsibilities other than being a role model and inspiration to his teammates.

I can't say your decision was bad to move the captain, but a captain is someone who displays great leadership in different roles such as communication, optimism, encouragement, etc. The captain also has the ability to talk to the ref. Captains are usually the older players on the team who have the most experience and will lead the team to victory after victory. Captains are the ones who tell the players who missed a wide open shot "Don't worry about it, you'll get it the next time."

The role of a captain is to be a leader and encourage the other players on the team. Most of the time in footie, the decent players are the captains because they're the best leaders. Some times the best players on the team are the captains, like Gerrard for Liverpool, Fabregas for Arsenal, or Terry for Chelsea. A captain sets examples for others to follow. The captains are usually the more experienced players on the team regardless of age.

the captain is the leader of the players. he's responsible for rallying the team. in the old days he was the representative of the players when talking to the ref. the ref used to actually talk to them about decisions he made back then. these days that aspect of the captaincy doesn't really apply

The captain has to be the most encouraging person in the team. He has to try to help his team in any way possible. :)
