  • How long to get puppy housebroken?

I have an 11-week old English Bulldog puppy. We've been trying to crate train him, and have read extensively on the "proper" way to crate train (I.e. positive association with crate, only out to relieve himself, not use crate as punishment, etc.) We know to put him I'n the crate for the night only when he's been able to relieve himself immediately beforehand.

However, despite the fact that we've been waking up at 5:30 to let him out to relieve himself in the morning, we still find his beddings soaked with urine. I guess we should be thankful that he's only peed in his crate, and not defecated, but it's becoming a tiresome ritual of laundering his crate beddings and washing the plastic bottom of his crate.

Is it just a matter or more time? Or is there something I should be doing differently?

  • Give me an EPL team to cheer for!?

As an American, I didn't grow up knowing much about soccer, as it wasn't played much here and wasn't on TV outside of Spanish-language broadcasts of the World Cup or Mexican League teams. However, I always liked the game itself and was fascinated by its immense popularity everywhere in the world except North America.

Now that the EPL is on ESPN and other American media outlets, I've gotten to watch a lot of quality football from the EPL, La Liga, Serie A, and of course, UEFA CHampions League.

However, I haven't quite nailed down what club team I should feel an affinity for. Can EPL fans tell me (in terms a Yank can understand) which teams have what types of fanbases? Which teams are known as chronic underachievers/overachievers? Which team has the most violent/most tolerant fans? Which fanbase is the most diverse or inclusive? Which is the team of rich snobs versus the team of the working classes?

    Just curious.

  • An animal ate the insulation under my hood - is my car safe to drive?

I have a 2004 BMW 325i, it's been parked in the garage for several weeks. I awoke one night to my dog barking strangely at the car itself, until I heard some scuffling under the car itself. I didn't see the rodent, but it was probably a rat or possum. I opened the hood, and lo and behold, nothing but insulation dust everywhere. The insulation pad that's attached to the underside of the hood was almost completely eaten away, and all the debris (mostly dust and small chunks of chewed-up insulation) was on the engine. I tried to broom away and vacuum most of it, but I'm worried about driving it without this insulation in place. The car started up fine when I moved it out of the garage, but I started smelling what was probably the insulation burning.

Also - is this insulation asbestos-based? Would be scary since I tried to vacuum it up and a lot of it was flying around.

  • Suggest a scope for an AK?

Recently bought a SGL-20 (civilian version of AK-103) - and planned to mount an optic on it. Can AK aficionados suggest a good, compact, low power (I'm thinking either a 1-4x or a 2-7x) scope?

  • AR-15 brands; levels of quality/prestige?

I'm a complete newbie regarding EBR's, generally I'm shying away from them because of the draconian laws my state (CA) has regarding them, but since they've become very common, they're actually relatively inexpensive, and the aftermarket options are literally dizzying. Now, I have heard of many of the popular brands of AR-15 style rifles, but don't know where they stand in a pecking order in terms of which ones black rifle aficionados consider the creme-de-la-creme, ones they consider good value for the money, which ones they consider serviceable, and which ones to stay away from.

I'm a 1911 aficionado, and so you can relate the brands of AR-15s to me in the terms of 1911 brands, where Les Baer, Wilson Combat, STI are the cream of the crop, Kimber and Springfield Armory are sort of middle of the road and very decent values for the money, Rock Island Armory is "serviceable," and Llama and Firestorm are 1911 brands to stay away from.

  • Why has the Philippines not produced an NBA player?

Basketball is by far the most popular team sport in the Philippines. It has been played for nearly a century in the Philippines, brought over by the Americans, and the PBA (Philippine Basketball League) has been in existence since 1975, with professional leagues prior to it having a healthy following.

Despite this widespread interest in basketball among the general populace in the Philippines, the PI have not sent a single player to the NBA. What gives? It's not height, exactly, since 5'10" Yuta Tabuse of Japan made the Phoenix Suns, and other short players have been able to play in the NBA. It's not money, either, since many much poorer countries than the PI have also managed to send at least one player to the NBA.

  • What are some good tourist destinations within close distance to San Francisco?

I'm going to be taking a road trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco. We're planning on spending a couple of days taking in the sights in SF, then driving somewhere else. I wanted to know from Bay Area residents what are their favorite destinations that are within about a 5-6 hour drive from the Bay Area. I'm thinking more along the coastline and going toward Oregon, not east toward Tahoe. Places that are child and baby-friendly would be a plus as well.

    Thanks!

  • My first Glock. Should I get the 19, or the 34?

I kind of settled on the 19 - I like its compact size, and when I rented it, it shot very well for me despite the small size and light weight. I already have a Beretta 92fs and CZ-75b, which is why I was attracted to the G19 as a smaller package in a caliber I already own and stock.

However, the gun store where I rented the G19 also has a G34 for sale. They didn't have any to rent, so I didn't get to compare side by side. But I'm curious to know from those who own G34s - are they really that much better to shoot? Better triggers? Or are they basically the same as 19s and 17s but with a longer barrel?

  • Rank the soccer leagues of the various countries?

Being American, I'm not that conversant about soccer, although I've learned quite a bit since the English Premier League is now televised quite a bit here in the States, and we occassionally also get to watch some UEFA games.

Now, I understand that the "big" leagues of professional soccer include the EPL, Italian Serie A, Spanish La Liga, and the Bundesliga of Germany. Perhaps the French first division and the Dutch Eredivisie to a lesser extent. But how do the professional leagues of other European and South American nations stack up in terms of prestige, quality of teams and overall pool of talent?

  • Question about Garand M1D sniper rifles?

I was wondering about rifles with offset scopes in general - i.e. rifles where the scope and bore are not on the same vertical axis. How does the scope being offset a little to the side affect zeroing, calculation of bullet drop, etc? Does it matter that much? Or does the difference of only an inch or so really matter all that much?

I'm asking because I mounted a scope on my M1A using a Bassett Machine mount where the rings are canted at a 45 degree angle and the rings I used were a bit taller than prescribed. Thus, the vertical axis of my scope is about 5mm to the right of the vertical axis of the bore. So I'm wondering if this setup is still useful or if I absolutely HAVE to get a setup where the scope and bore are perfectly aligned on a vertical plane.

  • What's the role/significance of a team captain in soccer?

Forgive my ignorance, and I know this is more a videogame question, but I figured the folks on this forum would definitely know more. I bought a copy of FIFA 09 for my PS3 (much cheaper than the current FIFA 10) and assigning roles to my team, my captain seems to be one of the least capable players on the squad. I took the captaincy away from him and gave it to a newcomer who is the best player I have.

I've just wondering what impact (in real life) a captain has for his teammates, and on what basis it's given on.

  • Are scandium revolvers as durable as steel?

I want to hear from those who own a scandium revolver. I know that scandium makes for a much lighter gun than steel, but how do they hold up durability-wise? Is their lifespan shorter than a comparable steel revolver?

  • Opinions/Experiences with the Ruger Blackhawk .357/9mm combo?

I was considering purchasing one of these convertible models from Ruger - probably the 6.5" barrel length. The gun will be mainly a plinking and fun gun, not anything for HD or even hunting, as I have many other guns that fit those roles better, but I wanted to hear from people who have experience with these guns.

From my understanding, the .357 Magnum and .38 Special both use a .357 inch diameter bullet, while the 9mm Luger uses a .356 (.355 according to some sources) diameter bullet. I've heard conflicting stories regarding the accuracy of the 9mm through the same bore - some say they've had abyssmal accuracy with the 9mm, while others claim it's more accurate than the .357/.38s they shoot out of the same gun.

  • Anyone have experience with the Romanian PSL?

Just trying to get some opinions about this rifle. The PSL is a Dragunov lookalike, but the action is actually just an overgrown AK. I've read lots of conflicting reports about them - some people love them and say they've every bit the equal of a genuine Dragunov, while others say they're overrated (and more importantly, overpriced) pieces of junk and that money spent on them could be better used elsewhere.

I still have a desire to get one, since I foolishly let my SVT-40 go many moons ago.

The gunstore I frequent has them for $1000.

  • What's so great about the .40S&W?

I want to hear from fans of this cartridge. I have handguns in 9mm, .45ACP, and .357mag (and the odd 9x18Makarov) but don't (yet) have anything in .40S&W. Tell me why a .40S&W would be a good investment.

  • Norinco 372 or Mossberg 500?

The Norinco 372, I understand, is a copy of the Ithaca 37, which has been largely phased out of production in the USA. I know that Mossberg 500s and Remington 870s are basically the Pepsi and Coke of the shotgun market, but I wanted to know about the Norinco/Ithaca and anyone's experience about them.

I was thinking of purchasing either one - the price is identical.

  • Do you think boxing should have a super-heavyweight division?

I think that most of the boxing organizations consider any boxer above ~200lbs. to be "heavyweight." In the old days, yeah this made sense since very, very few men would be naturally more than about 220 or so. But with training and nutrition regimens what they are today, we frequently see monsters in the heavyweight division who are in the 250, 260 and even up to 300 pounds range. The thing is, they're sometimes paired against another "heavyweight" who might weigh barely 205 or 210. How is this not a disadvantage and an utter mismatch? You wouldn't have 105lb. flyweight fight against a 160lbs. middleweight, so why should a 205 lb. heavyweight have to fight against a 260lb. "heavyweight?"
