It depends on what kind of fish you have. From there you can purchase the proper sized tank, filter, heater and so on. Before you actually get your fish, you must let your tank sit so that the normal healthy bacteria can produce to make a safe ecosystem in order for the fish to survive.
Read a lot books and articles. Pet stores offer advice and pamphlets. Research is important for any pet, even fish. And it's especially important BEFORE you buy the pet.
