inappropriate doctor behavior?

I took my disabled father to his regular acupuncture session this morning for the first time. The acupuncturist was an elderly retired doctor. After working on my dad for about an hour, he noticed I had been sneezing and asked if I had allergies. He then told me that he could examine me and give me a quick free session. I've had really bad allergies since moving back home and my parents have a lot of faith in his skill so I agreed to the examination.

It started off normal enough - he examined my nose and throat. But then he said that he suspected I suffer from heart palpitations and when I said I did, he started to check my chest with his stethoscope. He started at the top of my breast bone at first but then he plunged his stethoscope deep into my shirt - under my bra. He then began moving his stethoscope around my left breast, using his bare hands to move my breast around to get a better listen, and did the same for the right breast. My breasts were completely exposed during this "examination" and I feel extremely violated.

I was sexually assaulted last year and when the acupuncturist put his hands on my breasts I froze up. The entire experience was embarrassing and in my opinion very inappropriate. My dad was behind a curtain at the time so he didn't see any of this. I don't really know what to do at this point. My family is expecting me to take my dad to his weekly sessions now that I am back from college, but I never want to set foot in that place again. And while I know this is going to sound crazy/stupid, and while I am extremely uncomfortable about what happened, there is the slightest hint of doubt in my mind over whether this was necessary to check for heart palpitations. I just don't want to think that I've been victimized all over again. Does anyone have any advice?

If you were victimized, it was nothing like what happened before. I can see how you associated the two. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves that no two situations are exactly alike. Try not to dwell on it too much, because the situation alone, without the stress you're holding onto from something else, wasn't all that bad. You might have been weirded out either way, but I doubt it would have moved you to post on Answers had the other thing not happened. Especially since you made the connection and acknowledged that it might sound crazy/stupid. To put it simply, try to separate the two and then think it over.

Anyway, I find it really interesting that he just "suspected" you had palpitations. Who could do that?

Was there anybody else in the room? If he suspected heart palpitations and you confirmed them then it would make sense that he felt your breast bone and listen to your heart. Your heart is located beneath your left breast, with pretty much means your left breast is in the way of the examination. I would be doubtful that he was attempting to cop a feel. But it is completely unnecessary to remove your shirt and bra for the examination.

I go to regular acupuncture sessions and have heart palpitations as well. I can honestly say my doc has felt my breast, but NEVER requested I uncover them. I would consult your family and get their take on him and the situation. If they think he's a good, honest doc, perhaps your past experience made the unexpected a bit uncomfortable for you. You can always find another doc your more comfortable with.

Medical professionals are trained that if they must move a breast they use the BACK of the hand, and with permission. Most will even have a female nurse in the room as a witness against any possible litigation.

You have already been violated by the "acupuncturist".

Please call a patient advocate (look in your phone book) and get some advice.

pretty sure that isn't how you check heart palpitations, although I'm not a doctor. Also, I highly doubt that there is a link between your allergies and your heart, in terms of symptoms.

Sadly, there isn't really much you can do, it's your word against his. Maybe take a video camera with next time and try catch him in the act. Would love to see an old pervert like that lose his license.

    Good Luck

Take your dad, but stay in the waiting room. The check for heart palpitations is a set of wires attached to a monitor that you wear for 24 hours. This doctor was way out of line.

Sanjiv Sharma is a physician in Toms River, New Jersey.

I had had multiple complaints brought to my attention about his inappropriate sexual behavior as well as the fact that he has had employees work for him and refuse to pay them. He is what I would consider a classic "bad doctor" Sanjiv Sharma is trained in INDIA, apparently he has no idea of the laws and rules of the USA

    its not what you know

its what you can prove in court

    no point of arguing

    you let him touch you

and you gave him your consent

    to late

you shouldve stopped him while you could.

    so its your fault

    yes you were violated

but you did nothing to stop it

    no further argument

    and sadly.. yes

the stronger your heartbeat is the healthier you are

    easier to diagnose

    but you couldve prevented it

    but you let it happen

whether you liked it or not

and you cant say u were in shock because you couldve changed anything

    but you didt

    sorry

it happened, you cant change the past.. yet.

I totally agree- it is a violation. He's in your space, and, really, it's disturbing. He should have asked you if you were alright with what he was doing.
