SURPRISE! President signs health care reform into law: did you see this news item?
Washington, DC - In a Christmas surprise for the nation, President Barack Obama signed sweeping health care reform legislation into law at the stroke of midnight late Christmas Eve.
Lawmakers worked feverishly late into the night to hammer out the differences between the House and Senate version, then they rushed through a vote on the final version in both houses of Congress.
Lawmakers did not have time to read the bill, for the sake of meeting the president's goal of signing the measure into law before Christmas. The generals consensus is they will have time to read it after they return from the holidays after New Year's Day.
But the details that were revealed are that the final law will provide free health care for everybody, with no identity check and no deductibles. Abortions will be fully funded out of a trust, supported by voluntary contributions by those who support abortion. Doctors' offices will be required to make an appointment that is within 24 business hours of the patient calling to make the appointment, and patients will not have to wait more than 30 minutes after their scheduled appointment to see a doctor. More doctors will be hired if the office is unable to meet these requirements.
When dazed and bewildered reporters asked if this new law would increase the deficit, a sleepy but relieved President Obama replied "Maybe just a little."
Did anybody see this news item?
NOT!!!!!!
Nope, nothing like this happened, did it.
President Obama has FAILED once again to meet his own goal.
The Senate and House versions are each barely supported in their existing forms, and they are so different that it will be impossible to reach any compromise without losing the vote in either the House or the Senate. Losing the 60 votes in the Senate will mean endless fillibusters, so the Senate version is carved in stone. But House speaker Pelosi can't find enough votes in the House for the Senate version, so there won't be even a simple majority in the House.
Sounds like the president will be dipping deeper into the trillion dollar porkulus slush fund to buy some more votes in the House. At this point, even some Republican votes could be easier to buy than the remaining Democrat votes.
But that's all good, because then they can blame everything on the Republicans if three or more of them vote for it....
How much more time will Congress waste on this exercise in futility? Is Obama tilting at windmills at this point? Hasn't he spent enough time neglecting the other urgent issues facing our nation, such as reforming the financial system WITHOUT a repeat of the 1999 Gramm-Leach-Bliley act (which is what the current reform bill looks like)?
Yes, I'm still looking for that Christmas spirit apology from all those people who said "Bush is Hitler."
Merry Christmas to everybody else, though.

Yes I saw the news that the reforms America needs has overcome yet another hurdle.
I am always amazed how many Americans seem not to be aware about the real healthcare issues relying instead on FOX and other sources to spread lies about the healthcare system of the USA and those abroad. I mean, if healthcare in nations with universal coverage is so bad, why do they keep it?
Obama wants to make insurance more available to all and change the system so that it gives the American people value for money [1]. He also wants change so that the insurance companies find it harder to get out of paying for treatment. The system he is proposing looks similar to that which works in Taiwan where private companies are involved in providing healthcare [2].
Obama campaigned on reforming the healthcare system. He said he wanted to make insurance more available and he was elected by the American people to do this [3].
FACT - the US has higher death rates for kids both for kids aged under one and those under five than western European countries with universal health coverage [4].
FACT – American insurance companies push up prices and work to stop paying out claims on those they cover [5].
FACT - the USA spends more on healthcare PER PERSON than any other nation on the planet [6].
That means that a dead American four year old would have had a better chance of life if they were born in any western nation with universal health coverage.
If you do not like the policies that Obama was elected to bring in, he can always be voted out of office in 2012. But if you disagree with the facts, please let me know. I am always willing to learn, but please provide proof. None of those who disagree with me have been able to do that so far.

News to me, if supposedly true. The Senate did pass their version of the bill, but the House did not. There is no way BO can sign that bill into law without both the Senate and House passing a version of it. As for the cost of the reform bill, it was stated by General Finance Office that to implement the bill, once passed, will be 1.7 TRILLION dollars and the benefits will not be reaped for 10 years. And BO says it will raise the debt just a little? Just how stupid does he think the American Public continues to be? I don't have to be bitten twice to know that it hurts.

The House of Representatives and the Senate would need a two thirds majority to over ride a Presidential Veto to get a bill into law. In the case of Health Care Reform they don't have the votes to get it done "if" President Obama were to refuse to sign a law he doesn't agree with.

What rock are you writing this from? Health care IS the most urgent financial issue costing taxpayers trillions of dollars annually. Apparently people don't realize that health care costs were increasing anyway so it doesn't matter if the proposed bills save 100's of billions or cost 100's of billions --- the current path of steadily increasing health care costs would dwarf the proposed savings or costs in the proposed house and senate bills. At least now, if the bills are reconciled and passed, we can all walk a less costly path. The idea is to get anything reasonable and then whittle away at duplication and greed (mostly greed) endemic in the current system with good investigation techniques by responsible people in government and journalism. Why couldn't we do this before? We weren't ready before -- our awareness of the problem is much higher now.

No law would have provisions such as having 24 hours before an appointment or a 30 minute waiting time--that is something that the Dept of Health and Human Services would work out. therefore, I believe that your news sources are incorrect--either Fox News or right wing radio.

We will not see any real reporting by the liberal press as long as Obama is in office. Their job is to protect their messiah. I can't wait to vote the corrupt Congress out of office. Sure hope the rest of America wakes up to how useless they are and we need a fresh start.

If you read YA Politics it looks like this:
Aug..THis bill won't ever get past committee
Sep...This bill has failed, Obama will never get the two bills that past committee reconciled.
Oct...Man this Healthcare bill won't pass the house no matter what, Obama has failed.
Nov...This bill will die in the Senate, no way they will get 60 votes. Obama has failed.
Dec...Obama failed, he will never get the bills reconciled.
And when Obama signs the bill......
It reminds me of when Clinton eliminated the defecit, and reduced the bebt to 80 billion and we impeached him. Hahaha, it's just blind hate. I guess rich powerful companies like Aetna should be grateful to so many republicans who work against their own best interest.

The Dems will ultimately come up with a merged version, contrary to your wishes. Get ready, it's coming.
