Do yams taste noticeably different than sweet potatoes?
Usually my grocery store carries sweet potatoes and just calls them yams. This year they actually carried yams and I unknowingly bought them. Do they taste very similar to sweet potatoes? Can I simply swap yams for sweet potatoes in a recipe, or should I cut back on other ingredients?
I'm making candied sweet potatoes and I use cinnamon, brown sugar, cream, butter and marshmallows.
Thanks!

You can swap them out without a problem. I think most people won't notice the difference. I think yams have a slightly more delicate flavor.

Yams tend to be more watery and require far less cooking for them to have a similar texture.
Use them in your recipe anyway, as they are still a nice taste, but watch how long you are cooking them.
Sweet potatoes are more like a potato in texture.

They're all in the same family; yams are milder.
With those ingredients, no-one will notice.
