What event will exactly take place on December 21, 2012?

The (northern hemisphere) summer solstice will stay on or about June 21st and the winter solstice December 21st because the Gregorian calendar is designed to keep them there. All that will happen in 13,000 years time is that our current summer stars will have become winter stars and vice versa.

The Earth's axis is currently tilted at about 63º to the axis about which the Milky Way revolves.The 25,800 year movement (precession) of the Earth's axis will cause this angle to increase to about 83º in a few thousand years, then it will decrease again but the two axes will never be parallel or perpendicular in the forseeable future. This is completely unimportant anyway - rather like claiming there some significance in the fact that the pen on my desk is parallel to the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Absolutely nothing is going to happen. It all comes from the confused minds of a bunch of crackpots who have no knowledge of astronomy. Take no notice of crank doomsday websites.

The 2 axes will not actually align in 2012 - the "claim" is that the Earth, sun and galactic centre will align in 2012 (complete trash of course).

For those of you who believe those Mayan calendar lies: The Mayan calendar will not end. In fact, it never ends. 2012 is just the end of one cycle and the beginning of the next. Hey, doesn't our calendar do that every year?

For those of you who think extra gravity from Earth aligning with the sun and the center of the galaxy will cause the end: Earth lines up with the sun and the center of the galaxy EVERY year on the Winter solstice!

The Mayans just run out of space to extend their calendar any further than December 21, 2012 and while we run our year from Jan 1 to Dec 31, they probably chose Summer solstice to Summer solstice.

People who believe in the earth's doom on that date are farking idiots. Don't bother looking into it any more than that...

Especially considering that said alignment happened back in 1998 I think... So as you can plainly see, nothing will happen out of the ordinary.
