I am about to head from Wales to France on holiday. What is the best and most cost effective transport ?
I am really excited! I am about to head off for a European holiday with my son. We want to see the alps, experience some of the battlefields of world war 2, and maybe ski and snowboard. The problem is we are about to head off in about 2 days ( Like to be spontaneous) and I am not sure what is the best way to cross the channel. I like the idea of the ferry from Dover to Normandy, but am not sure if that is my best option. I am also not sure if we can just sort of turn up and buy a ticket when we arrive. I know that you can buy online, but like I say I like to be spontaneous and would prefer to purchase when we arrive. Any suggestions?

You can get tickets on the ferries pretty cheaply, unfortunately if your taking car you have to book well in advance to get the best reductions - you should be able to turn up and buy just buy a foot passenger ticket which isn't that expensive if i remember rightly.
also the ferries don't run from dover to normandy, you'll have to go from Portsmouth - Le Havre if you want to take a direct ferry to normandy, it's a 6 hour trip so may be more expensive =/
have you considered flying?
i'll admit i've never flown to france, the car and ferry is more convenient, but some of the low-cost carriers may fly out of cardiff to paris (can't be too sure on this one) - which may be cheaper than the ferry purely based on your spontaneity - unfortunately getting to france without booking ahead cheaply may be harder than it seems i'm afraid =/
