Question about Visa Gift Card and using it online?

I received a $25 Visa gift card as a Christmas gift. I want to use it online to buy something I have had my eye one for a while. But the item I want to buy costs more than $25. Can I use the gift card if the item is over the amount on the card? If I was instore, I could simply charge the difference to my credit card. However, not sure that this will be an option online. Someone suggested I use the Visa gift card to buy a gift card from the online retailer, but they don't sell gift cards. Any ideas? How can I use this Visa gift card online if the item I want to buy costs more than the value of the card? Thanks.

You need to find out first if that type of gift card can be used online...many of them can only be used in "live" transactions at stores...partly just for that reason, as they are only a certain amount. Most online retailers won't/don't make it easy to charge more than once account. A workaround may be to use your regular charge card and then use the gift card to pay for regular cash purchases to even it out. Or if you don't have a charge card, you can give the gift card and extra case to someone who does and have them order.
