Try either —
-connecting to your computer
-if it's an ipod nano or ipod classic, flip the hold switch on and then off. (meaning you'll go off-on-off.) then press the menu button and the center button simultaneously for about 10 seconds. This will force the iPod to restart. If it is an iPod touch, press and hold the lock button and the home screen button at the same time and hold them down until the iPod restarts (you'll see the apple logo).

it is either flat or broken.
have you tryed chaging it.
if it is resently new it should have a 1 year warranty. go to an apple store near you and they should tell you what the problem is.

You didn't hit it with a hammer hard enough the first time...try throwing it off a cliff.
