Why hasn't tobacco, alcohol and junk food been outlawed in the USA yet?

Tobacco - lung cancer, heart disease, emphysema, bronchitis, malformed sperm, throat disease, mouth disease, wrinkles, stained teeth, stained nails.

Alcohol - Liver disease, brain damage, kidney failure.

Junk Food - Obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, tooth decay.

Why are these lethal products still available?!

I choose to avoid all of these dangerous substances, and I would support the prohibition for children. If all of these substances were outlawed tomorrow, adults would find a way to circumvent the law. Prohibition against narcotics has not prevented drug abuse.

As a vegetarian, I know the health consequences of animal protein consumption. Milk, dairy, beef, and pork consumption correlate strongly with heart disease, cancers, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Again, I would support a prohibition of these foods from the diets of young children. Cow milk is totally unnecessary for a balanced diet, contrary to what industry money has done to the consensus reality. There is a theoretical model that explains how milk consumption correlates with type I diabetes in some genetically predisposed children. Dairy is also correlated with type II diabetes.

Today, industry shapes the mind space of our population. Shouldn't mass media provide us with accurate information instead of industry spin? If everyone had the unadulterated truth about these and other health issues, we would not need laws banning these items. It would become socially unacceptable to abuse them.

Does the word FREEDOM mean anything in America anymore?? Sounds like you want a nanny government to tell you what you can and can't do with your own body. If you don't like Alcohol Tobacco or Junk food, don't buy them. What makes you think you should decide for other people what they should or should not be able to put in their own bodies. While you're telling people what to do with their own bodies, why don't you outlaw tattoos, piercing, and pre-marital sex. People that think like YOU are one of the biggest problems America has to deal with. And Europe does not have a complete ban on these products. Check your facts.

IT WOULDN'T BE OUTLAWED, because the simple answer to your question is TAX. These products which you considered lethal in your own vocabulary are favorite past time of every Americans here on the planet. Everybody smokes by the age of 12 and up, everybody drinks also learning from the tender age of 10 and up and most especially everybody loves junk foods, kids and adults adore these quick food delicatessen. And all of the companies that produce these products are paying the US government of Taxes which is considered BILLIONS in terms of money revenue for the US government. Taxes which built your road/bridges/rail stations/pay the police men & women their salaries etc.

NOW LET US PICTURE YOUR OWN FANTASY let us remove these tobacco/alcohol and junk food. There is no company or restaurant that sells tobacco or alcohol or even junk food. Do you think there is an economy in the US to begin with? What? Everybody is in the attire of Flintstone and having a car made of stone?

IF YOU ARE JUST WORRIED that we all die because of these products, your absolutely wrong. Whether because of these products or not we are still going to die naturally or by somebody else hands is not really matter. Well if you hate them then just don't patrionize them or buy them period. But knowing in the future once you get married, your kids will have the junk food or smokes in later years and drink alcohol too. Wake up to the real world you are in.

If some one chooses to inhale or chew tobacco, drink or even have problems because of food that is not a problem as long as it does not involve hurting or destroying others lives around one.

You forgot to mention the mental cons against oh lets say a drunk; spouse abuse, DWI and killing some one else, etc.. I think the biggest problem is alcohol!

They have already taxed the crap out of tobacco here, now 5-6 $ a pack,, they should raise and tax the hell out of alcohol making it harder to purchase, but no the American system is built around a bunch of drunks! Hell even Obama stated one time "Let's sit down together and drink a beer".

How can one run a whole system with peace when one drinks beer oneself.

Source(s): Your icon should state NO MORE DRUNKS!

None of these will ever be banned, in my opinion. Millions of people are addicted to all of these things. Just because something is unhealthy doesn't mean it should be banned, especially junk food. I think everybody has had junk food at least once, including you. Banning them now would be a huge downgrade to an already bad economy. You don't have to consume any of the items you've mentioned, but they will NEVER be banned in this country.

If people choose to kill themselves by overindulging, that is not the responsiblity of the US government to stop it. It's called Personal Responsibility, which should also include healthy people planning for their own retirement (but I guess Congress thinks I'm too stupid to do that for myself, so they'll keep putting my money into Social Security, which is a joke). .

Prohibition did outlaw alcohol. That didn't work out too well.

Alcohol WAS outlawed breifly.... but this is a democracy and we got the law repealed. They are chipping away at smokers by making it hard for them to find places outside of the home and their cars to smoke. Junk food? too broad a term.... everything has SOME nutritional value.

Oh, and the GENERAL answer to your question is that it is WRONG to be more concerned about the quantity of life than the quality.

Sorry, but I've been in the health and wellness field for over 35 years, and becoming a "Health Nazi" and forcing behaviors on people is NOT the answer to good health.

NONE of these substances CAUSE any of the problems you list. They do increase your RISK for getting the conditions... along with many other behaviors that ALSO increase your RISK for the conditions. NONE of those substances are a DIRECT cause of illness or death. Taken in moderation and with other positive health behaviors to counteract any ill effects, you can minimize your risk for any of those conditions.

Legislating healthy behaviors is intrusive and not the answer.

You forgot that prohibition was a total failure. Tobacco is a works in progress to being outlawed . Nobody seems care how many people that will/has leave unemployed. Junk food outlawed? How many people would that leave unemployed? Your solutions seem to be flawed.

Some cities have outlawed trans fat, so other junk food and unhealthy eating is under attack.

It is just a matter of time until "big brother" protects us all from our bad habits.

One day we will all have to eat vegetables, no meat, and nothing but water to drink.

We will live a long and healthy life, not worth living.
