very safe for visitors. Nothing to worry.
It also depends on you.
nepal only have political instability. this does not mean that it is not safe.
so no need to fear. if you fear then you cannot enjoy the beauty.
i assure you that it would be your great experience if you visit nepal. another thing is that nepalese people respect visitors as god.

I often try to travel to nepal but unless I get my girlfriend's permission first, the results are usually disastrous

It totally depends on what you like. if u like adventures and challenges then it would be nice place to spend on, if u like to learn history behind vast culture, art and if u love to see nature at its best then u should go nepal...
if u are scared of little challenges then i wouldn't suggest u to go nepal, it is exciting and it is fun

Tourists are usually welcomed in most poorer countries. You probably won't have too much trouble, as long as you stay in places that are commonly visited and get local information about where or where not to go.
