Is public transportation in Rome reliable?

I plan to travel to Rome at the end of January. I wonder if public transportation in Rome is reliable and cheap or renting a car would be a must. Also I wonder how long does it take by train from Rome to Naples. Basically I would like to arrive in Rome and visit it and then visit Naples and Pompeii renting a car (more than) recommended

first of all i am Italian and i live near Rome...of course public trasportation is reliable, and it is not that cheap...if you want to bring for example a bus you pay 1 euro EVERY TIME you get it,and it is the same with underground.so,you should buy the BIRG for the A zone, which will cost a little more(like 4 euro)but allows you to to catch the bus and the underground every time you want the day you print it. it takes 2 hours from Rome to Naples by train or even more because you have to consider that here in Italy the train are usually late, sometimes even 2 hours, and they often get broken....so,if you want to come here good luck and prepare yourself for anything!!

P.S. when you go to Naples do not wear gold if you don't want to be robbed..

Yes, public transportation is reliable and relatively inexpensive. You do not need a car and you particularly don't want to be driving a car in either Naples or Rome. You can find train schedules and prices here: http://www.trenitalia.com/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoi... A fast train from Rome to Naples takes approximately 1 hr 10 min. There are slower, cheaper options.

When you get to the train station in Naples, follow the signs for the circumvesuviana trains. Take the train toward Sorrento. The Pompeii stop is Pompei - Scavi. the ruins are just across the steet from the station. There's a circumvesuviana trip planner here: http://www.vesuviana.it/web/en You'll be starting from the Napoli - Garibaldi station which is colocated with the Napoli Centrale staion. The circumvesuviana train to Pompeii takes 36 minutes and costs 2.40 euro.

Use the Metro to get around the city. It is only 1 euro for a one way ticket and trains come like every 5 minutes. Whatever you do, do not take a taxi because you will get over charged, especially if they know you're a tourist. About the train to Naples, just make sure there isn't a strike going on and you should be fine.

    hello!

I went to rome and naples last september and I thought that their public transportation was heaven! Living in Los Angeles, I know what bad and off-scheduled public transportation means so for me, it was good. The week or so that spent in rome was better than that weekend of public transportation in NYC last november (with all the closures and stuff).

If you are within rome, i would not recommend renting a car. people drive there like crazy (and i'm not being rude or anything, an italian that i met over there actually said that!). i guess i am just used to cars stopping for pedestrians, which apparently, they don't do over there.

Public transportation in Rome is reliable and cheap (1 euro one single ticket), the main problem is that the subway is insufficient (just two lines), but one can go by bus without big problems.

The connection Rome-Naples by train is excellent, unfortunately the fastest trains are expensive (44 euros!) but there are also regional trains, slow but really cheap (10,50 euros). Intercity trains are relatively cheap too (19,50 euros). From Naples to Pompeii you have to take the local train Circumvesuviana, it is practical and cheap.

On the contrary, I don't suggest at all to rent a car: traffic in Rome and especially in Naples is really frightful, and driving in them may be not a good experience.

And forget totally plane: there are no planes from Rome to Naples, it would be useless and ridiculous, they are only 200 km far each from other!

Public transportation is reliable (unless they have a strike going on, but they always give notice of the planned strike) and cheap.

They also have buses (and trains) that will take you from Rome to Naples (and Pompeii) at different times of day.

It will be A LOT cheaper to take the public transportation system and buses (and trains) to your destinations than to rent a car (not only the car rental is expensive, gas is very expensive - almost three times what we pay in the US - and you have to pay toll fees on the highways).

As far as how long it will take, it will depend on the train you take. The fastest one will get you there in 1 hour and 10 min (for 44.00 Euros one way), the slowest one (because it stops at stations in between) will take 2 hours and 10 minutes (for 19.50 Euros one way).

No , the public transportation italian is reliable , if you go by car to Naples we arrive in 2 hours, however I advise you to go to Naples by train, to travel into Rome you can use the metro, very convenient...

safe journey and a Merry Christmas ...

Lets see, its been in the mid-nineties lately so bring your sunscreen and some Euro for bottles of water. If you really want to wear shorts get the kind wear you can zip bottoms on them to make them pants, the churches (especially the Vatican) have a very strict Dress code about covering your shoulders and legs. Don't worry about blending so much, walking around Rome its always really easy to pick out the Americans no matter what we wear. But don't worry! Italians love tourists (well, our money anyways) and they are very polite and, if they see you're American, may make an effort to speak English to help you out!

Skip the trains - every time i have gone they go on strike. anyway, you can get really, really cheap airfair there. i bet between rome and naples even. too, unlike here, you can just go to the airport and get a great deal. no need to buy a month in advance etc. look for some local regional airlines. maybe easyjet or italia and you can prob. get ticket for 25 dollars.

on the flip side - driving around in rome may pose a challenge. i would stay very close to where you need to stay. then, for sightseeing, find someone willing to show you around who you will meet there from the job. As for the trips, probably renting would be okay. maybe just in those cities even if you fly there then rent or whatever, but seems like more fun if you get someone to go with you.

Many questions but only one assuredness, if you go to naples by car you will come back by train.....
