Do pickups effect whether your guitar does or does not get feedback from the amp?

Im in a band, and its complimentary for us to play loud enough so that the neighbors cant hear themselves think. Now, whenever i crank up the distortion dial and bump up the volume, i get a very loud squeeeeeek from the amp. the other guitarist told me it was feedback because the pickups on my guitar werent good enough. he told me i need to go and buy a guitar with "hot pickups". thats what will stop my guitar from sending out feekback.

he explained this whole science behind it: the guitar constantly is recieving distortion from the amp, but if the guitar doesnt have enough pickups, it cant handle the distortion, so it sends it back to the amp, which is why it makes that loud squeel. more pickups=more distortion it can handle.

can someone verrify? :)

Hello! Not sure where your guitarist gets his information, but the science is somewhat faulted. The feedback is a result of the guitar pickup sensing and then trying to reproduce the audible signal coming from your amplifier speaker. This forms an endless loop of feedback; the more sensitive (hotter output) your pickup is, the more prone it is to producing that wonderful non-musical squeal! Humbuckers are better at preventing this problem than single-coils, but proximity to the sound source is the biggest culprit. Try orienting your body and guitar differently relative to the speaker to see if that helps. You can also try cutting the upper frequencies on your amplifier, which can have a damping effect. Sure am glad you don't practice near me! Best regards, Dana

Great pick ups low noise cables should be good.??? If u are using distortion effects peddles/units these can overdrive the output maybe too much. Back off peddles and up the master volume on amp, when no feedback put main volume on amp to number 11. Go for it let a bit of feedback work. hope to here u from ear. to loud is no problem.(for me)
