Botanically, the tomato is a fruit, but not according to our illustrious FDA. Years ago the FDA and our government classified the tomato as a vegetable so we could impose a tariff for tax purposes

The classification of the tomato can be confusing. But there are key things to note. It can actually be considered a vegetable and a fruit at the same time depending on which context it's in. Scientifically, it is considered a fruit because it is actually the ovary enclosed with seeds that came from a developing flower. However, due to its culinary usage, since it does not have the conventional "sweet" taste of most other fruits, it is usually classified as a vegetable. It is most often served with other vegetables rather than with fruits or sweet desserts. However, some prefer applying the scientific definition while cooking, despite it not being prepared as a fruit. Additionally, the US Supreme Court declared the tomato as a vegetable purely on the fact that it is used most often as a vegetable when it comes to paying a tax under a tariff act. Hence, some "vegetables" such as cucumbers and squashes are also fruits according to scientific definition.

Pumpkins, and potatoes are starches, and corn is a grain.. DUH
But, tomato is a fruit, so as cucumbers, and bananas ( seed is at bottom of fruit)
The differents between fruits and veges are that fruits have seeds and don't end up on the grown when they are fresh.

Biologically, they are both fruits.
in terms of menus and diet, vegetables have much less sugar than fruits.
Avocados are considered vegetables, as is corn, squash of all varieties, etc. You're right...there are many things in the produce department that are considered vegetables, that in a biology class would be fruits.
Which might be part of the reason they are simply considered "fruits and vegetables" in the food pyramid, and "produce" at the grocery store.

Tomatoes are fruits just like cucumbers, bell peppers, zucchini, yellow squash, pumpkin, butternut & acorn squash, eggplant & jalapenos!
The reason is because all of these fruits contain seeds... which is essentially all fruits trait that makes them different from vegetables (well that and being much higher in sugar)...

Fruits have seeds internally; vegetables are roots (or ARE their own seeds).
Tomatoes and cucumbers are fruits.

One of the most healthy foods are fruits and vegetables. There is not any healthy diet without them!

Fruits and vegetables have hardly any calories, and they're easy to burn off w/ light exercise. And some vegetables like avocados are high in healthy fats.
