Should I buy an internal or external hard drive?
I'm looking at buying some more space. I currently have 6 hard drives ranging from 80GB - 500GB glued together in an LVM. I just use them for long term storage (ISOs of CDs I don't want to bother with, Movies, Photos, etc.).
I'm looking at expanding. What should I buy? Will a "green" drive save me money in the long term? Should I buy
* An internal drive and connect over SATA
* An external drive
* An internal drive and an enclosure and connect over USB
* Something else?
I don't have any exact criteria, just drive speed is nice, as is longevity, as is price. I run them connected to a linux media PC / fileserver with 6 drives already in there. The best price / space seems to be 1.5TB, right? Just looking for recommendations. Thanks.

Instead of having so many drives connected in your server, you could just get one or two 1.5 terabyte drives and move all the data into them.
And if you want speed, just put a few of your drives into a RAID configuration. However this means you're also more prone to data loss.
You can also buy enclosures that have e-Sata connections.. they're much faster than USB and makes your external drives work as fast as internal ones.

really depends...
green is a myth firsst of all... i tested my system which includes 3 pcs the biggest of which is an amd 9650 w/ 3 hdds, 6gb of ram, various video and nic interfaces and a 22/5 lcd moitor. the 2 smaller pcs; 1 1200 w/ 1gb ram and an ssd the other is a 1200 w/ 2gb ram and a 80gb hdd. the whole shebange ran for 23 days using 45.61 kwh totally under $4.50 including taxes and algore fees.. the whole idea of a green drive is silly in the extreme.
now...
in order to achieve what your'e asking, i decided on an NAS w/ 2 bays for drives up to 1tb each accessible from any pc on my network. it is essentially portable and smaller than a toaster, a little bigger than some external drives and variable in size/capacity as needs dictate. currently i use it for dvd "back ups" (read copies, but that is illegal) and system back ups off system. the unit cost me $40 and drives are pretty cheap these days. the only prob is the one i decided on (for cost reasons) isn't 64-bit compatible yet, so i have to use xp mode in my windows 7 64 to access it presently. however, i've researched others and havbe found some w/ 2 ethernet interfaces for faster data transferes and 64-bit compatibility, but these ar much more expensive. feel free to email if you want info on what i have found or have...

I would get the external hard drive. I bought one and I don't regret. It's always up-to-date. If your going to buy one, get a SeaGate.

Whichever one is more powerful.
