Has this virus ruined my computer?
I picked up a virus on my computer. Now, my computer is totally hijacked. I can't open any programs (including anti-virus software), or open any control panel folders. When I try to open anything, I get a message telling me the program won't execute because it's infected. The language in the warning is odd, it sounds like whoever did this isn't a native English speaker. It says "click here to stop the intrusion," and when I click on it, it opens a browser and tries to take me to a website to purchase anti-virus software (clearly a fake address, something like platinum.org). I haven't seen the actual website because once I realized what was happening, I disconnected the computer from the internet.
I'm pretty sure I picked it up downloading a fake version of Adaware, but not certain. Is my PC gone forever? Anybody have any suggestions? Do you think trying to re-install Windows will even work?
@Ace: I wasn't pirating anything! Do you know what Adaware is? It's a *free* software that a lot of people use. I wasn't trying to get something for nothing.

Have you tried Safe Mode with quality antivirus and antispyware and scan ....
A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows Describes how to use the Safe Boot option to start Windows with a minimal set of drivers. With this minimal set of drivers, you can modify the registry or load or remove drivers.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222
TRADITIONALLY....
When starting the computer keep tapping the F8 key (top keyboard). This will automatically start the computer in SAFE MODE which only allows minimum start up of windows for security scans. It stops malware running processes allowing safe removal.
XP AND HIGHER
Simply click Start > Run and type in without parenthesis "msconfig" which opens the configuration utility Windows Diagnostics Panel......
It will be on the frint tab as NORMAL. To reboot into Safe Mode click the BOOT.INI Tab and SAFE MODE and the computer will automatically reboot into Safe Mode for you when you click OK.
To Get back to NORMAL MODE when done scans and removal again Start > Run > msconfig ..... to open the panel and click NORMAL on the first tab.
If this was blocked your best shot is the traditional tapping F8 Key to gain entry to Safe Mode. This is very old procedure going back to beginning of decade. Problem is that trying to remove anything whether valid or malware can not be deleted or uninstalled with a running process as it may damage other parts of the Windows system and/or other softwares. this is why Safe Mode is used to stop all processes except basic Windows functionality to enable safe removal of malware. (Mal is french for sick - sickware , makes computer operate sickly.)

Yes, backing up any files you really need and then restoring the computer to factory settings is probably the best thing that you can do. You don't need to have the computer company do it. It's possible to do this for yourself IF you got system restore discs from the computer company. This is NOT the same as reinstalling the operating system, though... that would be you putting in your windows CD and telling it to wipe the drive clean and install windows. That wouldn't include a lot of the drivers that you need or want, and can be a major hassle. I know you probably meant the system recovery discs anyway, but I have had friend truly try to reinstall the OS and then I get panicked calls at 2 AM! Best of luck to you, and I hope everything goes well with your computer. Let us know in "Additional Details" when you get everything fixed!

Use combofix from bleepingcomputer.com, then go download malwarebytes from softpedia.com or cnet.com and use it(rename the installer if it doesn't let you install it such as winlogon.exe), then clean the rest of the virus with superantispyware and Hitman Pro 3.5 from softpedia.com/cnet.com
Future Protection use this wizard to recommend security protection for your system:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/secwiz
or go to safe mode and then do the above:
To get into Safe Mode with Networking:
1. Log out and reboot your machine.
2. When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.
3. Select Safe Mode with Networking from the resulting menu.
Or Manually:
Terminating the process:
1.I verify that a Rogue is present. This isn't hard, since it's usually popping up just about every few seconds.
2.Click CTRL-ALT-DELETE (if it's available)
3.Click Task Manager
4.Click Processes
5.Find a process that usually contain all numbers. For example 2342342.exe. If you do not see all numbers then your rogue has a name like...SystemSecurityPro.exe or GreenAV.exe...etc.
6.Select that process and click end process.
7.At this point the rogue process has been terminated.
Removing Rogue Anti-virus that is named with random numbers.
1.Click Start
2.Click Run (or for Vista type in the start search box)
3.For windows xp type: C:\documents and settings\all users\Application Data and click OK. A window will open containing a folder with about 8 numbers. Your Rogue is in there. Delete that folder.
4.For Windows Vista type C:\users\all users in the "start search" box and click enter. Your randomly named folder with about 8 digits should be in there. Delete it.
Removing Rogue Anti-Virus that has a name like System Guard Pro, AV2010, etc
1.Open Windows Explorer.
2.Open your C:\ drive.
3.Open Program Files
4.Find the Rogue and Delete the folder.
If not seek an expert. Good Luck!

Well no one on here can be certain its the virus causing the problem but of course that is exactly what it sounds like. Re-installing windows WILL work. It always does. As long as you can manipulate the computer enough to install a fresh copy and delete the old. If you pop in the installation disk for windows and turn off your computer and restart it, you should be able to access BIOS settings or boot setup by tapping F10 as the computer powers on. From there you want to choose DVD-RW or whatever it says for your disk drive. This will instead boot your disk drive instead of your hard drive and continue with installing windows instead of booting up your computer with the infected version. Remember, all your information and data will be erased during this process, but of course since you can't access any of it it's as good as gone anyways. Just install the new version of windows onto the hard drive letter the old version is on. Usually its C:. Windows will automatically start installing and you're pretty much done.

You definitely lost this OS. Just reinstall your operating system and stop downloading illegal or pirated software off the net. The easiest way to spread a virus is thru software. Why do you think people are 'giving' away free copies of software that cost $100's of dollars. Use some common sense. Now that you've been caught maybe it will teach you a lesson. and by the way - anything that was on that pc is gone! see ya bye gone! fuckd' up huh??

Just format the hard drive and re install the operating system.
and this time get an anti virus system that works.
ad-aware is an antivirus and you must never have more than one on your computer at any one time.
it could cause a complete system crash.
then you really will be kissing your computer goodbye.

Yep once you reinstall windows that will all be gone. Now if you have files in there that you wanna save then you can burn or buy yourself a copy of a recovery disk to save those files. Here is one of many out there.
