I need a durable, outdoorsy camera that has good image quality!?
Hey all,
I'm a college student who is about to do some huge traveling around the world, including studying abroad. I am also from Hawaii and love surfing, and go to a school near a mountain and love snowboarding. Most of the cameras I have, survive snowboarding so I'm not too worried about that. I go surfing, hiking and do a bunch of stuff around the ocean and am trying to find a camera that would be durable in SALT water as well as fresh water lakes etc.
I had a Rollei X-8 Sports camera, but I took it surfing with my friends today and water came through the lens and the battery case (even though it was completely shut and secure, and I cleaned the battery container area before going in). Basically the camera sucked, and it was from an unreputable company.
I am trying to find a camera that I can take with me hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding, surfing, etc. that will last.
I also want it to have decent image quality with (hopefully) IS because I can't really be stable when I'm mid-incline and see an awesome view of something and want to snap it.
I'm trying to put everything up on a portfolio as well, and am getting semi into art and want to keep a decent looking portfolio ... hopefully going in to travel blogging. (That's another story too!)
Any suggestions?!
I notice things like: "For a maximum of 1 hour.."
"for a maximum of 2 hours" under water..
Is there anything that will last an entire day in and out of the water? Lots of times we'll do 1-2 mile surfs out to smaller islands off the coast and chill on the island then surf back... the camera would be submerged for 1 hour at a time but on multiple occasions... Lots of times the cameras will be dragged in the water in shoulder-height water when we're snorkeling, diving, boating, etc... I just need something that will survive prolonged periods of time underwater

You might want to look for a camera that's rated for like 30 feet instead of just six feet. I have the Pentax Optio W10. I've never had a problem with it leaking, but I've only put it maybe two feet under the surface. It's only rated for six feet and I'm not taking chances. What's really suspicious is that camera you already had is rated for 10 meters so it shouldn't have caused you any problems. Just consider either the newest Pentax Optio W series member (W80 ) or Olympus Stylus Tough series (8000)

I provided some links, the first 2 list some cameras that are weather resistant or proof and the 3rd link is dpreview.com where I would go looking and ask for advice in the discussion forums so that you can hear some advice from other photographers.
Good luck.
