How do I get rid of flea infestation?

My home seems to be infested by fleas. We have no inside cats, but had some outside ones who hung around the back doors and would cause the things to come in the house. The cats are now gone but the fleas are not.

We use to only see them occasionally but lately my daughter has been getting bitten constantly. She was in her playroom for an hour and came out with five bites on her face. My wife has tried borax on the carpets, vacuuming, a spray, and other things. I need a way to get rid of them.

The eggs are hard to kill. They hatch after a treatment.

The treatments have to be repeated until the fleas are gone.

    The borax is good.

Baking soda sprinkled lightly and worked in with a broom and left on the carpet for a few hours and then vacuuming real good can get rid of the fleas.

Vacuuming a lot with the baking soda in the bag kills them too.

Some people use Gold Bond, there is a store brand, powder.

Go to the garden shop and purchase a can of SEVIN powder. Sprinkle it around the room and in the corners. Be sure to get in the closet and under the furniture. Work it into the carpet with a broom and then vacuum up the excess. You will not have another flea in that room.

The chemical in SEVIN is called Malathion. It does not affect warm bloodied animals or people, but is deadly to insects. It is used on farms and in poultry houses to keep fleas and ticks off of farm animals and foul.

A few years back, the entire greater Los Angels area was sprayed from the air with Malathion to kill an outbreak of Mediterranean Fruit Flys. None of the Millions of people sprayed were affected, so don't worry about any bad affects to your child or other family members.

use an aerosol floor treatment (not a fogger). It will have a residual insecticide and the IGR (insect growth regulator) and vacuum several times a day. You might place a nightlight in a lower socket then place a cake pan of water under the light to see if you are catching any. If you are not catching any fleas it may be something else causing the whelps/ bites, kid's skin are more sensitive and placing borax in a play room is never a good idea.

Best way is to go to your local Wal-Mart and buy some Bug Bombs. Be sure and get the kind that say they kill FLEAS. You need to follow the instructions on the can TO THE LETTER for safety's sake. Then at the same time get a flea treatment for outdoors. This is usually an attachment that contains flea killer that attaches to your water hose. The poison mixes with the water from the hose and you can cover a large area in your yard where the fleas live. Just be sure to follow the directions on the poison containers to assure you don't harm any humans in the process of ridding yourself of fleas! Good luck!

Source(s): Been there and done it! Had fleas so bad you would walk through house and before you had walked through two rooms you would have eight fleas jumping on EACH leg! It was horrible. We bombed the house inside and sprayed outside and spent the night in a motel to give the smell time to clear out. Never had another flea! Or for that matter, any other bug!
