unwanted telephone calls from unknown?

i keep getting telephone calls once or twice a day at least and on the caller i.d. it states out of area or unknown name and unknown number. if i answer the phone all i hear is a click. if i let the answer machine pick it up nobody leaves a message. i have no idea what is going on and this just doesn't make any kind of sense to me. what's up?

i have done everything that was suggested on yahoo answers long ago. it still happens. thanks anyhow.

    Don't answer. They will eventually give up.

    Yah, there is a national DO NOT CALL LIST you can call 1 800 555 1212 ask for the do not call list phone number Then ya call that it is an 800 # so no cost to you

    just dial *77 and block calls from private callers..
