Would you give a 14 year old a credit card?

And if not why? What age do you think is appropriate to own credit card?

I'm asking because I am 17. I hope to never get a credit card and think that the idea of children especially with credit cards is ridiculous.

I think that 14 is a bit young for a credit card, but there could be situations where it would be most useful. In these cases I would suggest a small prepaid card to avoid huge unexpected bills.

I got one when I was 13 when I went on my schools Washington DC trip. (My parents gave it to me Right before I left.) Now I guess since Ive always handled money carefully, I had no problem understanding the concept of buy now/pay later. I got an actual adult credit card when I was 17 though. Now I'm almost 22 and I'm about to buy my first home, not "apartment" and not "lease", buy. The credit that I had built up has helped me through the years and has allowed me to buy things I normally wouldn't of been able to, such as a car and a house. I am a penny pincher though and always have been (lol its a curse) so I know I wont just go blow $5000 just because I'm able to.

I don't think there's any specific age where its appropriate to own a credit card. Maybe 17/18 if I had to choose. But I think no matter the age, if you cant handle the responsibility, you don't deserve to have one. Some people I know don't believe in credit cards ...um I have no idea how they pay for school or living conditions, where I live those things aren't cheap (nor are they things I want to wait and save up for).

Oh heck no. Even though it really depends on the person, I highly doubt that any 14 year old could use the card as responsible as they should, it just purely sounds like a bad idea. At the earliest I'd say something around 20 would be a good age to get one when they understand that they actually have to pay the spent money back at some point.

A debit card on the other hand wouldn't be such a bad idea. I got one when I was 14-15, and I always used it carefully because I knew that any more money wouldn't be magically appearing on to the account by itself, I'd have to put every single cent in there myself.

Heck no... i really doubt that any 14 y/o would know enough about money and debt to be able to control themselves and their level of spending.

I really think that you shouldnt even be able to apply for a CC untill after 25... as its just way to easy to over spend. Im 24 and still paying off the credit cards i got at age 18.

Now i realise that alot of things need to be paid for by credit cards and i think that the debit cards are a fantastic idea and should be more widely offered!! I would still think about it tho with a 14 y/o as this could give them access to alot say over the net that is not sutible for a minor.

It was probably a pre-paid OR debit card OR his parents put him on their card as an authorized user on their credit card. You must be at least 21 years old with a stable job to apply for credit. If you're between 18 to 20, you must have a steady job, and/or co-sign with someone 21 years or older with a job and good credit.

No, that is illegal. In order to get a credit card you must be 18 years +. In some provinces it's 19+. To give a supplementary card to someone, they must be above the legal age as well. I know you don't like the idea of having a credit card but you should consider it as it increases your credit score and will allow you to get a mortgage. As long as you pay the balance in full every month you wont have to pay interest.

Credit card no... debit card maybe. It depends on the child and their grasp on money. If a credit card or debit card is used to complete a transaction then it's fine but not to be used or thought of as income. It's a debt no matter what you call it.

  • No, I do not believe a 14 yr old should have it. Bad-bad idea. LOL
