Mare with persisting scabs (from summer bugs) on girth area?

We have a mare who over the summer gets very scabbed up under her girth and belly from scratching at insect bites. Now that it's winter, she's not having much of a problem, but there are a few persistent scabs. I'd like to use something to loosen them up that won't sting or itch, because she's found a way to scratch her belly on the rough ground, which just makes it worse. Someone suggested diaper rash cream- any favorite brands? Desitin, Butt Paste, etc.? The vet has checked her out and said at the moment that it's not infected or bacteria or fungus-related, they're just remnants that are still tender and mildly irritating. I've clipped the patch so the hairs aren't being pulled, too. And she's had her teats cleaned as well, and she's on a rotating dewormer schedule.

In the summer, we use fly predators and marigold fly spray, but she's just a bug magnet.

So... diaper rash cream? Other good products? How to help her better next summer?

Thanks!

I've used Desitin before for rain rot and it worked absolutely great. Fura-Zone is really good for keeping bugs off of cuts or scabs as well. Corona Ointment is great too. I don't know if you have a tack store near you or not, so here are the Dover Saddlery links:

Desitin should be available at your local grocery store.

If its not that serious and your vet also has not suggested any particular thing, go for something harmless and natural.

There are some herbal remedies that are safe and gentle to use without the unwanted side effects of conventional medications.

Carefully selected ingredients such as Borage, Horsetail (Equisetum arvense L.), Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) and Kelp support skin health and provides symptomatic relief for itchiness, scratching, redness and burning of the skin. In addition, Yarrow (Achillea millefolium), Nettle (Urtica dioica), Echinacea (Echinacea angustifolia) and Hawthorn (Crataegus laevigata) strengthens the immune system as well as overall health.

Is he additionally balky and/or does he have hardship determining on up a definite lead? if so then threat is the posterior pectoral muscle is in touch. Its the muscle at the back of the foreleg and that they help pass the foreleg. that's a flat triangular muscle that lies against the ribcage at the back of the horses foreleg. this may well be tight because of the fact of incorrect saddle placement. in lots of situations human beings place the saddle suitable at the back of the elbow and it pinches the muscle and reasons little spasms. Or it could be girth length, in case you journey dressage the girth, as you understand, is short and could be putting rigidity suitable in comparison muscle and reason it to be tight.Or that is a slender girth, because with slender girths the rigidity is focused and much greater possibly to reason issues. Or doing an identical maneuvers back and back could reason this, inclusive of cantering infinite circles etc, Or it could be deep footing, which tires your horse and reasons muscle tightness. Or it is going to possibly no longer be the girth or the like in any respect, he could have a decrease leg injury and be lightening this muscle to maintain some weight off of it. it can be a sort of or possibly a mix of them. if that's the posterior pectoral then you certainly will experience a small warm canines shaped lump. in case you do them use your palm and gently artwork alongside the muscle. in the adventure that your horse pins his ears or steps away then the rigidity is basically too plenty. it is going to frequently launch in a jiffy and could experience delicate and pliable. do no longer use the information of your palms to rub down the muscle because it is going to easily reason greater soreness. do no longer use your elbow or knuckles the two as you could no longer experience the muscle adequitly this form. Use your finished palm. in case you do no longer experience the small warm canines shaped lump then your horse could basically be chilly subsidized and assoicate the girth and something touching the girth section with a saddle which reasons him soreness. yet usually a horse who paws is basically looking forward to some thing inclusive of exercising or nutrition! stable success!

Gold Bond Medicated Powder works GREAT on scabs and scrapes. It has a soothing effect to it and for whatever reason, it causes things to heal very quickly. We've used it on some pretty nasty cuts, that weren't able to be stitched, and the healed perfectly with use of the powder.

My TB has the same problem. The flies were so bad this year she actually got into the marigolds to eat them. We used a home made poultice to help clear it up. Once it healed over we used Destin and a trip ant. ointment.

okay try soaking a rag in hydrogen peroxide and gently rub/ squeeze the rag onto the effected area then buy some fura-zone at your local tack/feed store and with gloves on gently spread onto the scabs.

    hope this helps!

Sudocrem is good, an antiseptic and soothing cream, used for nappy rash and often found in stables. you get it in any chemist shop. small or large tubs.

try a small one and if it suits then get the large size as it is a regular problem for your horse.

Try using MTG (mane tail groom) for her scabs. It's good for just about everything.
