I no longer answer every question many times over again in each response for various operating systems. When people don't bother mentioning what OS they use, I just assume they use Windows. Therefore, if you want specific advice about some other OS, please add "additional details" letting me know which OS you use and I will expand on that. I don't want to waste my time and yours though, so for now, I will assume Windows.
If Windows, install ffdshow-tryouts: http://ffdshow-tryouts.sourceforge.net/
Then install Media Player Classic Homecinema: http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/
If *nix or OS X please use something with a xine or mplayer backend, such as KMPLayer or SMPlayer. In OS X you could use the excellent MPlayer OS X Extended frontend available here: http://mplayerosx.sttz.ch/

XBMC Media player, or SMplayer if your video card is not up to current standards...
XBMC seems to be the best unknown Media player that has the codec that always works, and it is a free software program...

SMplayer is a very good free video player, but I like XBMC the best...
