    use substituition

    5(-4y)-2y=44

    -20y-2y=44

    -22y=44

    y=-2

    x=-4y

    x=-4(-2)

    x=8

    answer y=-2 x=8

    5x - 2y = 44

    When x = -4y,

    5(-4y) - 2y = 44

    -20y - 2y = 44

    -22y = 44

    y = -2

    Substitute y = -2 into the equation.

    5x - 2(-2) = 44

    5x + 4 = 44

    5x = 40

    x = 8

    Thus, x = 8 and y = -2.

    you can substitute x=-4y into the first equation. that is,

    5(-4y)-2y=44

    -20y-2y=44

    -22y=44

    y=(44/-22)

    y=-2

    now that you have what y is equal to you can substitute that back into the second equation and solve for x. that is,

    x=-4(-2)

    x=8.

    therefore if 5x-2y=44 and x=-4y then x=8 and y=-2.

    We can solve this using substitution. Take the first equation: 5x-2y=44. Since x=-4y, we'll put -4y everywhere we see x, giving us

    5(-4y)-2y=44

    -20y-2y=44

    -22y=44

    y=-2

    Now we know the value of y, so we can take the second equation, x=-4y, and plug in -2 everywhere we see y.

    x=-4y

    x=-4(-2)

    x=8

    So our solution is x=8, y=-2.

    it will help if you put it this format:

    5x-2y=44

    x=-4y

    ______

    So i am going to substitute x in the first equation with -4y since it is proven in the second equation.

    5(-4y)-2y=44

    -20y-2y=44

    -22y=44

    y=-2

    Now, we know what is the value of y, but we still need the value of x, so we plug in y with -2 to find x.

    5x-2(-2)=44

    5x+4=44

    5x=40

    x=8

    Check (see if we did everything right)

    5(8)-2(-2)=44

    40+4=44 ~ correct!

    8=-4(-2) ~ correct!

    ok...this makes more sense and the other guys are correct except in a system of equations you still have to solve for x also so if y = -2 then x = -4y = -4(-2) = 8

    x= -4y put this value in the given eq

    5x-2y = 44

    5(-4y)-2y =44

    -20y-2y = 44

    -22y =44

    y=-2

    and x=-4y = -4*-2 = 8

    Ans x=8 and y =-2

    Good luck !!!

    5x - 2y = 44 when x = -4y

    5(-4y) - 2y = 44

    -20y - 2y = 44

    -22y = 44

    y = -2

    - 20 y - 2 y = 44

    - 22 y = 44

    y = - 2

    x = 8

    5x-2y=44

    5(-4y)-2y=44

    -20y-2y=22

    -22y=44

    y=44/-22

    y=-2

    x=-4(-2)

    x=8

    answer: y=-2, x=8
