Honestly, it is not a good idea to use a tampon when you aren't having your period. I would suggest you just be extra in tune with your body and go to the bathroom to check more often. Chances are that you will have some cramping as the first sign or will have spotting first. If you need to use one and have trouble putting it in, try a different position, or try using some spit to lubricate the vaginal opening. Hope that helps.

It is unsafe to wear a tampon if you aren't having your period, it can cause toxic shock syndrome, and that is not cool at all! If you haven't started when you get in the water, don't sweat it, the start of your period is so light it won't matter anyway.
However, if you are having your period then, a tampon is safe to use in the water. Also, consider alternatives, like the diva cup. It is easy to use, economical, and very discreet. Its a little pricey, but as its made of plastic it is actually made to be washable and reusable. Awesome for when you are having your period and are on vacation, or need to be more discreet that usual!

you should at least practice before you go, but if you know your going to start i would suggest just using a pad or some toilet paper until you do. its really quite simple once you get the hang of it. you have the applicator that has the tampon inside. you place it inside your vagina, just barely and push the bottom of the applicator up so the tampon remains inside. you'll be able to feel the string. dispose the applicator. if its really painful you probably have it too deep so its irritating your cervix so just use the string to pull it out a little. remember you can become really sick if you leave your tampon in for too long. it should never be in longer than 6 hours, and if your periods really heavy it will have to be changed more frequently. make sure you have plenty on hand, and extra clothes in case you bleed through. good luck and have fun!
