How do you knit a sweater/cardigan?
I've perfected knitting in the round by making dozens of hats, now I'd like to push up the bar a bit and start on sweaters/cardigans. Thing is, all the patterns I'm finding show to require a bit of background knowledge on how to make them in the first place, which I don't have.
Are there any good, comprehensive, step-by-step patterns online on how to knit them?

I think that this site may be the one your looking for. I took a quick glance at it and there were approximately 18 pages of information you may need when knitting anything besides the sweater. One thing I don't know whether or not it is mentioned is that I got soooo bored when I was knitting the sleeves that I could have screamed. I then decided to do both of them at the same time and what a relief and also the sleeves were identical in increases, decreases and getting it done. I hope the sites help you and e-mail me if I can be of any further help.

I knit my first sweater in the round, a raglan sleeve top down pattern, after only knitting hats, scarves, and mittens. But the pattern was in a leaflet lent to me by a friend, not online.
You may want to push the bar a tiny bit first and try knitting mittens in the round - holding the stitches for the thumb is a lot like holding the stitches for a sleeve.
Here are a few raglan sweater patterns I found via Google:

There are. The yarn companies usually have free patterns for simple sweaters. Knitting Pattern Central has a collection of links to projects of all difficulty levels. Lucia the Knitting Fiend has all sorts of help, including pattern generators, at her site.
Other places to look on-line:

And there are many more. Blogs and home pages of knitters contain more sweater patterns than one person could knit in a lifetime.
A couple of suggestions:
1. You might start with sweaters/cardigans for babies or small children. This page, http://www.bevscountrycottage.com/kp3.html , has one version of a quick-to-knit baby cardigan that uses top-down construction and raglan sleeves. If you don't ever need baby gifts, you can donate baby sweaters to local charities; meanwhile, you have learned new techniques and finished an item quickly.
2. While you don't need to use the recommended yarn--just one in the same size category and same texture--I recommend you use a yarn that feels good to knit and that you'd actually wear. Nothing is so boring as making stitch after stitch in a yarn you don't like.
