How do you keep shoes on your toddler?

I have twin sons that have decided they hate shoes/socks/clothing. The clothes I've taken to duct taping a single strip over the fasteners, which keeps those on, but I wouldn't feel right doing so with their shoes or socks.

When I take them out to visit family, or even to go shopping, I get constant comments about how cold their feet must be, and I've even overheard the occasional stranger accuse me of being a bad parent.

It isn't as though I don't want them to wear shoes and socks, or that I don't provide them. It's simply a matter that they take them off the minute we're in the car and then throw them down into the floorboards where they get mixed up with toys and board books. I've taken to just putting them in footie pajamas for shopping trips, and even that sometimes gets rude comments from strangers.

What can I do to help them learn to keep their socks and shoes on?

Get pairs of high tops that have laces, not velcro, and double knot them. Your sons won't be able to pull those off. I personally wouldn't feel bad putting a strip of duct tape on when I'm out in public to keep the shoes on if it's cold outside or if my son will be walking outside or on the floor of a store. Whenever my son is inside in someone's house he is barefoot as he is just learning to walk.

    Good Luck!!

I've found it easier just to ignore the busy bodies. My son is 2 1/2 and still talks his socks and shoes off first chance he gets. I figure if his feet get cold, he'll let me know. Of course if we are out in a store when he does this, he has to stay in the cart. If he wants to get out, he'll hand me his socks and shoes back now.

If we are at someone's house, then I just explain to them that he used to be being barefoot at home and unless there is some danger to his feet, I let him be.

Some fights just aren't worth it, and socks and shoes are one of those for me.

put them back on and give them time outs when they take them off. Tell them it is not safe to not wear shoes outside. They will get Boo boos. Very interesting question I must say
