Would you leave negative feedback for extremely high shipping charges on ebay?
I purchased an item on ebay and am beginning to think that the seller has taken advantage of me with regard to shipping. I didn't realize until after the sale that the $8.00 shipping charge was for parcel post and not priority mail.
I understand that this is my fault for not reading carefully, and I immediately messaged the seller and asked if they would kindly ship it priority mail for that price. I know the item can easily go for the priority basic rate of $4.80 because it's under 1 pound, but the seller has not responded or has not even given me word that they shipped my item.
This is becoming a bit concerning for me as I dislike when sellers charge ridiculous amounts for shipping (the parcel post package is probably $2.50 for the seller to send).
What should I do? I think it's unfair for them to charge $8 for a $2 shipping service and would never do that to someone I sold to on ebay.
Am I being outrageous?

You're not going to like my answer, I'm afraid.....but here goes. The "shipping" on Ebay isn't always just for shipping. Sometimes it's for "handling", too. The seller has the perogative to add on fees for the cost of shipping supplies, packing materials, etc. They do it in the shipping fees department. That may be why the cost seems high.
You're correct, it is your mistake that you mis-read the shipping method... so you shouldn't leave negative feedback. The other reason I feel you shouldn't leave negative feedback is that the seller will MOST PROBABLY leave negative feedback for you (and that will lower your feedback score).
A responsible seller should have responded to your question by now, it's true. But, I would chalk this one up to "lesson learned" about thoroughly reading the shipping costs and let it go. I, personally, wouldn't risk the negative feedback for just a few bucks.

A new ebayer (or even some seasoned ebayers) would not neccessarily know the price of shipping before an item has been received and you can look at the service used and the quality of how it was packed and the stamp price (and recorded etc...)
As a seller on ebay you are entitled to charge for your packaging and a small handling charge
$2.00 -$8.00 is excessive (but allow for the time and care to wrap/ bubble and all would likely be another $2-$3 on top of the stamp price depending on the item)
He may likely send as priority as he realises you know his P+P is excessive ( then you should leave a positive)
If he does not ,I would give the seller a chance to refund some of this excessive P+P/ or reflect your transaction in his feedback and stars

You should have read the information more carefully before betting on the item.
I think it is your fault as well. It's not fair to penalize the seller for your misunderstanding. You should have emailed the seller before you paid for the item. They should be able to show you how they got the price...
You may think it's unfair and it probably is, however it is a bit outrageous to blame them completely and try and get out of paying the shipping. The bulk of the issue was your mistake to begin with. I'd just let it go and wait for your product.

It is the buyer's responsibility to decide whether the shipping and handling charges are fair.
Where they get you is the "AND HANDLING" part.
You agreed to pay the agreed-upon price when you paid the seller. It is your own fault.
I know a lot of eBay sellers and have sold a lot of things on there myself. I always charged a flat $5 for shipping AND HANDLING; even if it cost me only $2 to ship.
Most eBay buyers are savvy online shoppers, and they know what the ultimate price of the item they are purchasing is, or at least the range it should be in. If you still paid less than you would if you bought the item yourself, then you have nothing to complain about.
The seller is under no obligation to charge only the exact cost of the cheapest shipping service possible. You have to remember; the seller had to photograph the item, list it, work with getting your payment processed, package and ship your item. That is where the "AND HANDLING" part comes in.
Quit crying about the cost of shipping; no one forced you to make that purchase. The seller is not being shady, deceptive or dishonest. YOU are the one salty that you agreed to pay a certain price and now you want to backpedal.

I have to disagree with these people. I don't think you're being outrageous and I think you were taken advantage of. Ok, yes you should have read the shipping price more carefully, but really there is absolutely no reason a reputable seller has to charge such exorbitant prices for shipping. I guess I could understand if the seller had to package the product carefully and thus spend a lot of time or resources in the packaging. But if it was something unbreakable and easy to send then there is no excuse and yes I would leave negative feedback...maybe then the seller would think twice about overcharging his customers.

You can leave a low score for shipping in the star area. I wouldn't give them a negative feedback though because the shipping charges were stated and you just missed them. I have done that too. You could say item was great but shipping was a little high in the description if you want. It's always a good policy to be as nice as you think you can because it will come back to haunt you.

Next time, read more carefully and decide if it's worth it.
Leve positive feedback unless you don't receive the item or if it's not in the condition specified. But what I would do is in the comment space, warn other customers to double check shipping and handling charges.

" I think it's unfair for them to charge $8 for a $2 shipping service "
I agree, but they probably posted the charges and you didn't read closely enough.
"I understand that this is my fault for not reading carefully"
Hey, look at that. Negative feedback can affect their ability to sell, people will be more concerned to buy from them. They didn't do anything particularly nefarious. Yes, they are charging too much, but that doesn't warrant negative feedback. If you had read, you might not have bought and this wouldn't be an issue. As I see it, the blame is almost entirely on you for the mistake (a small bit on them for charging so much). It wouldn't be right to penalize them for your mistake.

It's sneaky, but it doesn't deserve a negative feedback. If they had misled you by saying shipping was for priority mail then it would deserve one, but as you say, it's your fault for not reading carefully.
If everything else was ok then I'd give them a positive f/b but with a low star rating for shipping charges and communication, and maybe even mention it in the feedback comment.

First, it is your responsibility to read the entire listing, ESPECIALLY shipping charges. You want to neg someone because you refuse to read? Additionally, it's not merely the price of postage. There is often the box, packing materials, and the time they taken to get it out to you. That's why it is called shipping AND HANDLING. You have the option to not purchasing something you do not think is offered fairly.
Yes, you are being outrageous. It's called "personal responsibility." You need to acquire some.
