Question on lattice energy....please help......?
What are the Born postulates in defining lattice energy of a stable molecule? How it approaches to define the forces in a covalent molecule?
What you are required to do is- only mention postulates as serial number (1), (2), (3), ...... etc. and then give a scientific derivation of equation(s), if at all exists, and to explain how they came in describing the forces in a covalent molecule. That's all. Thank you!

You mean the Born-Landé equation?
Born and Landé proposed that the lattice energy could be derived from the electric potential of the ionic lattice and a repulsive potential energy term.
The lattice energy of a compound is dependent on a number of factors
-- as the charges on the ions increase the lattice energy increases (becomes more negative).
--when ions are closer together the lattice energy increases (becomes more negative).
The unscientific way to say it is:
In ionic compounds:
lattice energy will be higher when there is a higher charge and smaller radius. Lower when lower charge larger radius. Reason is the lattice energy of an ionic solid is a measure of the strength of bonds in that ionic compound.
