Are there any Americans that actually think church and state should not be separate?
Lola - I did watch Jesus Camp many times! It was very sad / disturbing.... thanks for reminding me!
Neil - then we wouldn't have religious freedom. So what happens if you're Christian and our government decides to make it a Jewish nation..... then what? how would feel? You really think we should take away the right to chose our own religion?? Even if it means you are forced to convert to a different religion?

There are a buttload of Americans who believe that - in fact, the entire evangelist movement is based on marrying the two.

The question most people debate is not weather or not they should be separated but how much they should be separated:
Should people with religious beliefs be able to propose laws that punish people for doing what they say believe is wrong ?
Should they be allowed to oppose laws that require them to do what they believe is a sin ?
Should their tax money be used to pay for government programs that their church is against?
Should government run schools teach children things that contradict many of their parent's beliefs ?
Can a government employee be allowed to express his faith ?
There are a number of questions about what should be allowed and what should not but I doubt anyone wants the government to decide which religion if any is true or to have a government run by church leaders.

They were never meant to be separate. I can understand why so many can't discover the truth by reading literature way over their comprehension level. The shame is on America for allowing so many to turn out so illiterate. The longer the two remain separated, the shorter lived a free state. The state that relies most on God is the one that will always offer liberty and justice.
The men that stood up and literally gave their fortunes and lives for a God-fearing nation would not believe how it has turned out. Nobody can blame them. But some are reviving the not forgotten truth, even though modern history text writers are trying to bury our true beginnings. Some claim Christians are re-writing history, but in fact no public school history textbook I can find shows a Christian heritage, but in fact writes out the Christian heritage. Aside from the protected content of the Library of Congress, public and private libraries, museums, and many other sources, there are some who are presenting the whole truth in amazing ways.

The constitution does not say that church and state should be separate. The difficulty is that people are trying to use the interpretation of separation to mean that religion should only be practiced behind closed doors. I think they should be separate in that congress should not respect a given religion but not in the sense that religion should be elimated from society.

There are interesting arguments for both sides....but leave it to YA to simplify an issue.
The thing I find disturbing is that it has become some sort of voodoo. There should be a differentiation between teaching ABOUT religion and teaching religion in schools. In any case, most religions are also going to influence the public political sphere, strict separation of church and state are technically impossible imo.

There are a good number of Americans that want to meld the two. It's become more and more apparent in recent years. What they don't understand is that the United States was created based on the belief of church and state and that there was a reason why.

Unfortunately, yes:
"The Constitution of the United States, for instance, is a marvelous document for self-government by the Christian people. But the minute you turn the document into the hands of non-Christian people and atheistic people they can use it to destroy the very foundation of our society. And that's what's been happening. " (Pat Robertson)
Peace.
